Coolant Loss - VRS TDI

Featured Replies

On a petrol VRS oil temp thread a couple of people mentioned coolant levels had dropped to low mark. I've been keeping an eye on the coolant levels as mine has been topped up in the last week but is starting to drop again - had a good look around with no visible leaks, no sludge in the oil and no white exhaust smoke. Now I have moved back to UK car is sitting in traffic a lot more than previous use on the continent. It's booked in for a check over next week - anyone else had any similar issues?

Mine dropped once so I topped it and it's been fine since. l've a feeling it was only on the minimum from the factory.....

I have been watching my coolant level for a while , it's all over the place up and down down and up. The other morning I jumped in started up and the coolant warning light came on (lovely colour red) as the car is parked on a slight incline I drove of to work and rechecked at lunch time (3 mile drive max speed 60 kph), low and behold the coolant was nearly non existant, 5 hours had passed since I arrived at work so the engine would of been cold by now. Of I popped and spent 16 euros on a bottle of G3, got back to work and popped the bonnet open and guess what the coolant level is bang on no need for a top up. I walked to the garage as it's 5 minutes away. Peculiar to say the least anybody else experiencing this?.

Not so far with the Octy but the previous Yeti then yes, although I didn't get a warning light, however it fluctuated between max and min throughout the year.

Oh and over the three years of ownership I topped it up I think three times, usually with 200ml of coolant/de min water mix but on service no leaks were found and the pressure test was good :wonder:

Warning light has come on for me - only 6k miles on the clock and its just below the minimum level

Is there a specific coolant I should be using for the Octy III?

Says I'm supposed to use this one on the Halfords website

If it is just on min mark top up with distilled water and monitor - will not dilute coolant too much in the short term.

I would just use the VAG / Skoda coolant from the dealership to ensure same pink colour - if you mix with blue or green, it changes coolant to a brown colour and difficult to check if something is going wrong - ie corrosion etc.

My current octi had to go in under warranty to get a coolant leak sorted. I was told that it was an engine out job and took two days. I was kind of hoping Skoda would have got this sorted in the new model.

So a small top up with distilled water has got rid of the warning light and will get some proper coolant from the dealer at the weekend - its called G13 according to the service guys

The one time mine ran, below the minimum but no light I just topped it up with tap water, been fine since.
