how to fit cruise?

Featured Replies

Hello I am new to the forum but I have been reading posts on here for a long time. I just wanted to ask I want to fit cruise control to my car but I can't just fit the stalk can I? Do I need to activate it using that vag com thing? I have a long drive to work and back so would be nice to have,

Thanks

Provided your steering controller is compatible then you just need to fit the stalk and activate with VCDS. What spec is your car and does it have maxidot?

yeah just a case of fitting the stalk then getting someone with vagcom to activate it. i even have the module that ross tech say it cant be used on and it works perfect. i was a bit worried about fitting the stalk but its was a really easy job only taking 30 minutes.

It is worth getting the car scanned with VCDS first. A stalk cost about £70 from Skoda/TPS. You may be able to get a 2nd hand one off eBay or there are cheaper none OEM ones also on eBay. A new steering controller is £100+.

My car had a controller that was listed by Ross Tech as not compatible but it actually was. But that was because of the specific software version on the controller - one version works, the other three don't.

Thanks for the replies, I don't know what maxidot is to be honest lol and I'm thinking about going to a meet in scarborough this weekend and people have vagcom there, so I just need to ask one of them nicely to scan it to check if I can fit one the plug in again to activate it? Thanks

Maxidot is the fancy trip computer in the middle the instrument cluster. If shows a big picture of the car with correct door open when you open a door you have maxidot. If it just shows the little red door open symbol you don't have maxidot.

Is your car pre or post Facelift?

What do you need to go into with VCDS to check the ECU campatibility ? And what are you looking for for a good one ? Is it simply changing values on VCDS ?

You need the part no. and software version of the steering controller.

Can you read that through VCDS or is a physical required ?

VCDS will show the hardware and software versions when you do an autoscan.

Any use for cruise ?

Yeah saw that but has note #1 against it ?

So when I change the stalk , what next with bcds to enable ?

There is a how to on the Ross tech website. From memory you recode the steering controller and do an adaption on the engine controller.

Missed that note but guess you won't find out until you try.....

I have a feeling that could be the same version of steering controller as my car, I'll try and find a scan in a bit and check.

Any updates on this? I have the same controller for steering as VRS mule and ive been wanting to do this for ages... but I remember a mate doing it on his passat and having to run wires to the fuse box etc... cant be arsed with that.. is it a case of buy a stalk, plug it in and code it? if so any ideas what part number i need for the stalk and what bit I need coding in vcds?

thanks in advance all!!

OK, swapped computers.

Mine is:

Address 16: Steering wheel Labels: 1K0-953-549-MY8.lbl
   Part No SW: 1K0 953 549 BC HW: 1K0 953 549 BC
   Component: Lenksäulenmodul 036 0070
   Coding: 0000042

IIRC the 036 bit on the component line is the important bit, I think this relates to the actual software version.  Obviously mine works OK with cruise.

I have a BC controller on mine and, despite what Ross Tech say, mine works with retrofit cruise control.

Can't recall what SW version though. Sorry.

Recoded steering controller then the engine controller and have been enjoying CC ever since.

£25 for a used CC stalk (from a FL Oxtavia, so bought matching wiper stalk as well) was pretty good value in my opinion.

Anyone know if this part is the right one for my 2007 VRS?? 1K0953513G

Also can someone explain whats meant by slip ring?
