Electrical gremlins including failure to start

Featured Replies

Been realising of late that the infomat, media/radio system and maxidot, can on occasion have a mind of their own. Today for example started the car up to find the radio playing but when I shut it down on Friday I had the SD card selected and this is not the first time this has happened.

Also get a similar thing with the infomat; most times I leave it displaying driving data from start, however on the odd time it switches to the car status page instead on the next turn of the ignition.

Then there's the maxidot which has changed what its displaying a couple of times while the cars been running but without input from me; first time it spun through the menus like a fruit machine wheel.

Beginning to think we have a Gremlin or Poltergeist living in the electrics but a dealer visit might not resolve things, as they tend to want to see the fault and these occurrences are very random.

Read others have had some issues with the infomat but anyone had similar to this :wonder:

I know the infotainment will switch to vehicle status (if CAR is selected) if there's something you need to know

Thanks and I thought thats how it should work, however every time it goes to status it tells me there are no entries to report :wonder:

A Danish member of the vagforums.dk has had his instrument cluster/maxidot completely replaced because it kept doing what your maxidot is doing. Maybe worth a trip to dealers.

Cant do any harm to get dealer to see if a fault code has been reported.

Have updated the title of this post, as our Octy has had a bad week so far regard electrical gremlins as follows;

Monday

Maxidot changes itself from displaying driving data speed to audio SD card; around the same time I used the indicator

Tuesday

Started the car to instantly get a stop start error message on the maxidot (infomat stayed on driving data since start). Cleared message by doing an engine restart.

Thursday

Go to start the car internal lights come on as usual but I get nothing from the engine, not even the sound of a relay moving. Turn the ignition off but keep the key in and try again to get the same but notice the yellow engine warning symbol stays on. Turn off, remove the key and try again to find she fires straight away. Drive a hunred yards down the road to see the maxidot playing up again by changing from driving data speed to driving data average speed.

All very odd and I've now got her booked in to the dealers but I'm not holding my breath they will find anything unless there's a fault code :wonder:

STupid question but have you checked the battery terminals are tightened - a neighbour of mine had all sorts of similar problems some time after his was delivered and they found this was due to loose battery terminals...     that hadn;t been checked at the PDI...

No I hadn't thought of that and I've just had a look to find the negative is OK but the positive I can turn the clap round the post with little effort, although to the eye it looks tight.

So many thanks for this and I'll see how we go now it's fitted correctly

Unfortunately the loose positive battery terminal does not appear to be the cause of the maxidot gremlin, as it changed from driving data speed to average speed seconds after start up this morning without command :wonder: :S

I've had repeated Start Stop system errors, there is now a software update to cure it.

Sounds like you have other issues though as well!

Bit pants that a battery terminal is loose on a new car though!

Mine had a loose battery terminal too... Seems a common problem.

I've had my used octy for just over a month now and I've been experiencing the bolero changing radio stations and not responding to me changing the driving mode. It's seems to be when the cars started from cold for some reason. It's already been back to the dealer I got it from and they changed a couple of settings on the dab because they said it was probably searching for stations. What a load of rubbish. It went funny the other day adding random contacts to my favourites list. Looks like I'll have to go back again. It's most likely the capacitive screen. It's just getting dealer to admit it's faulty.

Sorry to hear this buddy,..mine, touch wood, has been spot on the money, no problems thus far.

It might be worth giving the screen a good wipe with a microfibre cloth.

I've wiped the screen many times but it doesn't make a difference. It just makes me feel very uncomfortable having to take the car back with problems. I wondered whether to try my more local dealer instead.

It's under warranty - use your nearest dealer, doesn't have to be the supplying dealer.

My nearst dealer is just over 20 miles away and part of the Keith empire, as in my next nearest dealer over in York

Westgate in Grimsby is unknown other than they don't return phone calls, so really I don't consider I have a local dealer.

Just to update having picked the car up from a week stay with the dealer while I was on my hols.

The stop start issues they traced to an airbag ECU error code and I belive they updated the software if I understood the service desk correctly, although on the invoice it states, ran component protection test plan, cleared fault : OK :wonder:

They are however unsure if this was also responsible for the failure to start I've experienced, as there was no error code for this issue.

Maxidot/infomat issues also produced an error code which was traced to the wiper control arm with the control rocker switch; arm replaced.

Radio/media issues remain unresolved, as they did not observe the problem while it was in their hands and again no error code could be found. Interestingly on the way home I noticed the infomat touchscreen media selection key greyed out and became unavailable and only by turning the infomat off and back on did the function restore itself, even though the SD card was working fine.  :wonder:  :wonder:

Youv'e had the same software update as me at a guess for the stop/start - I was getting weird airbag control module errors as well.

I've noticed the same - whatever source you are listening to is greyed out on the Nav and Car screens until you change source or radio station, then it becomes available all of a sudden. Almost as if the services are starting in the wrong order from a cold boot.

I get that sometimes on my bolero with my ipod via mitsumi.

Not had any airbag issues that I'm aware of, so it was interesting to hear the systems ECU was the potential cause, although I'm aware the stop start takes information from various systems.

Also and I'm not sure if I imagined it, so one to monitor but on the two or three times stop start kicked in on the way home I felt the engine revs rise a little before the engine cut out, which it didn't do before the supposed update :wonder:

Not noticed this happen before and in our case we just have the standard usb port, plus I changed nothing before it greyed out; car was playing music from the SD card as it does most of the time I have any music on in the car.

I didn't have any airbag issues, that was the fault code logged in the engine ecu. The date and time it was logged coincided with start stop failing.

Sounds as you suggest that we have the same issue. Has the update fixed the stop start and have you had any problems starting your car ie turn the key and nothing happens?

Yep, update has fixed it and no further issues
