Private plate

Featured Replies

Looking for a private plate for my car. Been looking at ones that are £399 on the DVLA website and they state that they included all the fees etc.

What i'm wondering is what happens when i sell the car private or trade it in for another car as i would be keeping the plate? What fees are paid and how long does it take etc?

Have a look on the DVLA website the info is there.

The fees will depend if you decide to put it on retention first before you buy a new car or just transfer it.

I think the transfer fee is £80.

You can do it two ways.

1. Put it on retention, this currently costs £125, but it's easier to do, if using a dealer, as the number is the first number that the car will get from new.

2. Just do a swap and that costs £80, but can include a lot of faffing about, but probably the best for private sale.

Just ask the dealer if using one which they'd prefer.

Retention cost is £105 - £80 transfer fee plus £25 per year to retain the rights to it.

If you're selling privately, the only way you can keep the plate is via retention really - so £105 rather than £80. Unless you've already bought the other car and have the V5 for it in your name, then you can transfer it straight across.

When you sell the car with a private plate on, you want to put your private plate on retention as Wardy describes above.

That way you have all the paperwork to give the new owner/garage with the old pre-private plate back on it and you can also transfer it straight on to the new car.

Since the DVLA local offices closed trading in a car with a private plate for another that you want the plate on is a PITA, so it's best to take it off a month before.

Yep, leave a month for the swap back, as a MINIMUM. As I've just found out....
