Caught Out by Double Kerb

Featured Replies

This morning as I drove into a parking space, I scraped my front spoiler on a double kerb, couldn't see it until I hit it!!! (Concealed by bushes)

I've taken the paint off down to the metal, as I have already got a number of stone chips on the front bumper, (all one unit) I asked the dealer for an estimate to do the whole bumper, (repair & re paint) quoted £360 inc vat, it's at their VW body shop, & have been assured of a professional job, what do you reckon? I haven't booked it in yet, & was thinking off getting a few other quotes, Smart repair for today's scrape only, £150 plus vat.

  • Ouch. Sorry to hear that.   As you've gone down to the metal I would advise an 'official' dealer repair in order to maintain your anti rust warranty.

  • Where there's blame there's a claim eh?  If the curb was concealed by bushes surely its the OPs fault for driving into the bushes?

  • You should kerb your enthusiasm when negotiating curbs- Sorry! Wrong way round!

You say you've caught the front spoiler/bumper but then you mention it's down to the metal...... the bumper is plastic.....

Any chance of a claim on the land owner if the curb was hidden? Surely it should have been clearly visible?

Kerbs are at ground level.  By their very nature they have a tendency to become hidden.

I was quoted similar when I did exactly the same with my Scirocco, the repair was perfect.

From my experience of body shops, I'd say £360 incl. Vat is pretty reasonable… and I'm sure the dent in your wallet will remind you to keep out of the bushes in future!

Well where the paint has been scraped off, I'm seeing silver!

The plastic of the bumper is a light grey colour.... touch it, does it feel like metal or plastic?

The damage, luckily this is only visable from looking underneath on hands & knees

Like I said, plastic. :)

Yes I know I'm being fussy, but it gives me the excuse to get the stone chips, around 7 done at the same time, by having the whole bumper repaired & re-sprayed.

I had decided to live with the chips, even though they annoyed me everytime I wash the car!!!

Ok It's plastic then!

Occupational hazard with a car getting stone chips and scrapes - I'm now of the opinion unless it is a massive/in your face bump just leave it and bank the money. If come trade in time you a knocked a few hundred off for a repair you have still got that money in the bank.

I know what your saying, but I'm gonna get it done!

Gladwin's Body Shop will refurb the whole bumper for £300 inc vat.

I've done a similar thing to mine, but the damage is not visible unless you get your head down to ground level. I'm leaving it, cos it won't rust and the stone chips on the rest of the bumper will be back within a couple of weeks with all the motorway mileage I do, Mine is officially no longer a new car!

I intend to keep mine a good few years, & like to keep it clean & tidy, so it's booked in for next Monday, I've not done 5000 miles yet, almost had it a year! Just got the new tax disc (free)!!!

Fair play, it's your pride and joy and your cash so go for it matey. I'm pretty ocd about my car myself but it's basically a losing battle for me doing almost 2k per month as it replaced my old company car as I opted out to avoid Ford or Vauxhall hell but I'm proud of the fact my Golus wheels are still like new, I'm still using wash n wax on them every week, even if the rest of the car skips a wash, the wheels still get done including the insides as the spokes are far enough apart to get my hands in, plus a clay bar and full wax every couple of months keeps the brake dust and tar spots at bay! I've also just ordered my new tax disc too, but mine cost a whopping £20!

Will wait a while after I get car back, due to the new paint, car goes in tomorrow for 2-3 days.
