Fabias in Crosswinds

Featured Replies

Does anyone else find the Fabia particularly sensitive to crosswinds? I think apart from the rear-engined Estelles I had years ago, the Fabia is the worst car I've ever had for being pushed around in even mild crosswinds. It needs constant steering corrections to keep it straight. There is nothing wrong with the steering or suspension and the tracking is spot on as well.

Tall and narrow

Kindov box shaped

Yeah mines been bad today too! I had a 206 previously and that was better in crosswinds than my fab now.

Yeah, I think a lot has to do with them being quite tall. I even notice when I'm stationary (like at temporary traffic lights) and other fast moving cars are passing me that the body gets pushed around.  I previously had an Escort 16v and it was a very stable car. I suppose the guys that have their suspension lowered and have bigger tyres don't suffer it quite so much.

Yes, my Fabia estate is pretty bad in strong cross winds. I almost hit the rumble strip in the outside lane today when a gust hit.

My scariest driving experience was being hit by a side wind in a 110 on the m54, all 4 tyres groaning as I went from lane 2 to the hard shoulder whilst turning in the whole time

Binned my pants shortly after !

Didn't know Landys were bad in the wind. They do look about as aerodynamic as a brick though.

I thought mine was very good a few months back I drove back from the NW highlands in a terrible storm with 100mph gusts. Most other cars were going a snails pace but my Fab felt okay up to about 40mph.

It was so bad my passenger couldn't open the door and had to get out via the drivers door!!

I suppose the standard ride height, light MPI engine and the soft, sloppy standard suspension don't help on mine.

Yetis aren't great either from experience. My Fabia feels very slightly better after lowering but not a lot.

Lower the car and use bigger wider wheels ? Can't say its something I notice nowadays myself

My car is basically just a shopping hack so not really looking to change it. I can live with it, I was just wanting to see if other people's Fabs were the same.

The van was quite bad today going to visit Jars, but it' s

been very windy in Bristol today.

Plus, it's about 6ft 6 tall, bit taller than a Fabia anyhow.

You lads want to try driving a double decker bus in high

winds... Now that is interesting.

Haha, no thanks :D

Not driven a bus but been a passenger in a single deck bus in high winds which was scary enough! The wind blew the doors open!

Being able to throw the wheel from 10 o clock to two o clock positions - whilst continuing in a straight line comes to mind whenever Defenders and steering is mentioned.

It's not great, however compared to being on two wheels it's fine. I will never forget going round a corner in a sheltered section of DCW that opened up to an un-sheltered section and being lifted from the outside lane to the inside lane. Try opening the windows on both sides... through draft will reduce the buffeting :D

I've got the 1.4 mpi as well, and it does get blown about a lot. I can't help noticing that the ride height is pretty high, and as you say, pretty squishy suspension. Guess I'll have to get a VRS... ;)

Riding my road bike (push bike, not motorised) in the wind is a different story though! It's terrifying! Especially when there are people passing with only inches to spare and i'm getting blown a couple of feet either side...

I remember push bikes well. I used to go everywhere on one before I could drive. Mind you, the roads were a bit less busy back then, I wouldn't like to have to ride one now, it's bad enough in a car with the amount of idiots about.

Aye, road bike is just to keep me fit for mountain biking ;) There are too many idiots, i try to stick to back roads at silly o clock in the morning...

Having had both an SDI Fabia and a vRS I'd have to say there isn't a

ton of difference either way. The vRS is only 15mm lower and whilst the

dampers are a bit firmer the springs aren't much different other than being

slightly shorter than the ones on the SDI.

These cars need money throwing at them before they handle respectably.

Ah, must be the smaller wheels making it look that way then!

Being a new driver and this being my first car, I wouldn't really know how a decent car could handle, I'd love to get my hands on a VRS though, some really fun roads around here! (north wales)

I plan to visit on two wheels quite soon.

Looking forward to exploring Wales on my bike.
