Automatic Transmission Confuses Dynamometers

Featured Replies

Well, attached is a scan of the dyno plot from Jabbasport.

As you can see, it's a bit unusual ;)

Here's my take on what's going on. If anybody can tell me what's really going on, I'd be grateful.

The torque curve starts off high, then gradually drops. This is what you'd expect; the torque converter is increasing the ratio between engine speed and wheel speed at low revs (multiplying torque), but as speed increases the ratio is getting closer to 1:1

The power curve is interesting - instead of gradually rising, as you'd expect, it starts off high(ish) and stays high. The dyno is expecting a constant gear ratio, so interprests the multiplied torque at low revs as high BHP. As the revs rise, the torque multiplication drops and the dyno is getting closer to the real engine output.

Notice the top speed - 242 kM/H - this equates to over 150 MPH. Shome mishtake, shurely?

I think there are a few gEAr cHAngEs in there as well :)

Have another go Mike , a bit bigger :D

Mike, sure is a strange looking graph....but who cares - as long as it drives like it should -- and I'm sure it does

it must be the gear changes on the auto, dont forget for us manual owners the power run is done only in 5th (i think) with no gear changes. thats not an option with the auto.
