Yay. Ordered a elegance after a years break from Skoda

Featured Replies

The car is still in Emden (where it was before I purchased it). I hope it moves soon or I might as well have ordered a new one to the spec I actually wanted

How long since you ordered?

Too big, for us I'm afraid. Wouldn't fit in my garage either - but agree the XF is a very fine car indeed and I would much rather have one than a BMW 5 series which is it's direct competitor.

Yes it is quite a large car. Never mind, the XE will be around shortly.

If I could have waited another 12-18 months the forthcoming XE would have been on a very very short list - maybe next time round. Never owned a Jaguar - ought to at some stage as their cars have never been as good as they are now for many many years. Be good to patriotic and buy a British built car!

Only problem with the Jags nowdays is you have to buy your own pipe, cap and slippers they are no longer supplied as standard.

Ah but they arent those type of cars anymore.

Let me know when you have the XE. I may need to come for a spin

I'm getting ever closer to retirement - so would fit the bill nicely - although I agree wholeheartedly with JungleJames that Jaguars have come a long long way since those days and it would be very wrong to associate any modern Jaguar with that image.

Some years off now I'm afraid - the Three Series Touring we plan to keep for a good few years, hopefully.

Ah well. The touring should be a mighty fine vehicle. Theres probably not a lot of difference between Beamers and Jags as far as decent comfortable drivers cars go. Enjoy

In my experience, the 3-series Beamer is far from comfortable. The seats are way too low, too hard and difficult to find a good driving position. Long journeys are a recipe for aches, pains and stiff legs. It's about 10 years since I was last in a jaguar (s-type), which was far more comfortable then a Beamer and I expect the more modern XF and XE will also be better.

That should light the blue touch paper and start the explosion from the "I love everything German" brigade!

Ah i see.

Well youve managed to perk my interest up now. I'll head out sometime and take a test drive in a Beamer 3 series. Will do the same in a Jag XF as well. See what i reckon. Will try and leave my patriotic glasses at home when i do so

This is Briskoda - it's love everything Czechoslovakian.... :giggle:

Never had a problem with BMW 3 series comfort or driving position we had a 3 series Touring several years ago and it was a brilliant car- my wife has hip and back issues and amazingly the BMW sports seats and Porsche "comfort" seats are the only ones we can find that are comfortable for her. She finds the Octavia comfort and driving position surprisingly good.  Volvos also possibly - but there are limits.... :giggle:

In our long mission to find a good replacement for our run of Porsches we tried a good many cars - Audi A3 was very good, but S3 not so - the seats were harder and she found them instantly very uncomfortable and I hated the car's engine. BMW 1 series - tried the M135i which had a very offset accelerator pedal and twisted her right hip painfully. (We also learned that trying to replace a Porsche with any kind of hot hatch pseudo performance car was a total no-no). Tried Mercedes but don't really like them. Tried a Lexus IS300 but again, offset pedals. Looked at SUV's and fast (ish) saloon / estate cars which don't pretend to be sports cars as the only way to replace Porsche. SUV's proved no good as the high step up to the seats too much of a stretch for her - she is "vertically challenged".

With the 3 series, she didn't like the comfort of the standard Dakota leather sports seats and I didn't like the quality of the horrible cheap hard leather but the BMW Individual Merino leather seats were much more comfortable - leather much softer and quality wise in a different league. But a must have with a BMW is the electric seat adjustment and lumbar support, the manual BMW seat adjustment is crude and difficult, and also the adaptive suspension which hugely improves not only the handling but also the ride quality, the standard suspension on M Sport versions actually rides harder than our outgoing Porsche 911. So, hence the final decision to go for the 3 Series M Sport Touring. Fast, comfortable,we both like it and it is very versatile. Certainly wouldn't want anything physically larger than a 3 series, otherwise, as I've said earlier, Jaguar would have been very much on the short list.

XK = Too old a design now, I'm sorry but nowhere near as good as a 911

F Type = Very expensive for what it is, the cheaper ones not within a thousand light years of the latest Boxster - in any way.  The most expensive (V8 - sounds great but no way as good as the latest 911 - for the same money. Most serious for us, there is no stowage room for touring.

..as you may gather from my comments, if we'd a sports car we'd have kept the 911.

I'll take your word for it. None of them are for me. Was just going by the fact the F Type is getting very good reviews (well apart from the boot!)

Id have said the XK was a more cruiser/ sports car combined, whereas the 911 is pretty much full on sports car? I may be talking crap though.

Im just trying to imagine someone stepping out of a 911, and stepping into an Octy Elegance :wonder:

Nope, cant see it

That's why the 911 had to go!!

Previous generation 911 (the 997 which is also a 911 and at the same time a Carrera unless it's a GT2 / GT3 or a Turbo in which case it's a 911)was more of a sports car. This is what I had.

The latest generation 911 (known as a 991 and a Carerra unless it's a GT3 or Turbo in which case it's a 911) has changed a bit, softer, better finished and more luxurious inside and is now more of a GT car. Except the latest GT3 which is very much a sports car, and once they've fixed the engine problems - a couple of cars blew up - big ends came apart - will be probably the finest drivers car on the planet

Paid the tagging deposit last Thursday. Thought it would have been on a ship by now. They were aiming to get it to me by the end of the month.

Hmmm... if Carlsberg done mis-quotes

Thankfully certain people on this thread have much nicer ways of putting it.

It can take more than a week. Especially if it is busy. Mine took over a week from ordering, to getting on a ship. However, it was thankfully very quick in getting to the dealers once this side.

Thanks. Was told skoda there are 3 ships this weekend. I can't see any on the marine website though.

When i last checked, we worked out the ships in question usually had the word 'Highway' in the name.

Getting a little peeved now. Looks like there are no ships due for the next week to sheerness from emden. Only ones going to Grimsby. So that will be 3 weeks my car will have been sitting at the port by then. I will be giving my dealer a call tomorrow. There is no way I will be getting it between 2-3 weeks from order.
