please help me,, steering wheel not straight

Featured Replies

Hi guys I have a 2011 fabia vrs, alls well apart from one problem, when driving slow the steering wheel appears to be straight and true but when any speed is up it has to be turned about three inches to the right, so I'm driving straight and the steering wheel isn't, I've had it to the garage , where I was told"can't see anything mate"anyone any ideas Coz its really annoying me and spoiling what's a great little car, thanks

have you had tracking done recently? if so go back and ask them

are all the tyres at the correct pressure?

or if its under a warranty, then get the mechanic to come for a little drive

If by speed you mean on a motorway, is there any chance that this is the effect of heavy road camber?

I know on my drive to work exactly where the heaviest camber is on the M62 because I can't hold my wheel straight ahead in those sections or my car would drift.

Even more confusing when for drainage purpose the camber switches from left to right in one section.

But always worth getting a hunter laser alignment done.

When I say speed I mean 30mph, and the steering wheel goes of centre, its so annoying, car is still under warranty but my local skoda franchise is a joke, so what can I do

Maybe contact SUK customer services in the 1st instance. Alternatively is there another dealer you could take it to?

I took it to a garage I said have a good look,I said if it needs out done just do it, when I picked it up, he said everything looked ok, but problem persists :-(

Call Skoda UK Customer Services.

Find out if your Car is due a Field Action as part of the DSG 'Service Campaign'.

When they are arranging work on your DSG if required,

see about a Competent & Qualified Factory Trained VW Technician Inspection your steering and inspection & road testing the car.

If one is not available,

ask the Dealer Principle to drive your car.

Just phoned them George, my cars ok, nothing required, and how do I distinguish who's competent and who isn't,I recently took my car to local skoda garage to find out what was rattling on it, and after commandeering my car for a full day I was told"can't hear out mate" so I took it to my local mechanic who spotted it in two minutes, and my car is still under warranty for what that's worth

Ask the Service Desk if you can talk to the Workshop Manager or Master Tech,

Voice your concerns and ask if they will please Road Test the car.

Just Name & Shame the Dealership if you think you can.

Sounds like they deserve others to know of the Customer Care & Service they provide.

Good posts for good dealers,

& posts of Experiences at not so good seems fair.

Your problem appears to be a little different to the usual 'pull to the left' variety extensively reported on this forum..

The first thing I would do is get this car on a garage ramp (a driver in the car) and slowly attempt to pull away. It sounds that something has mechanical movement/loss here at the front and needs to be checked before anything else is considered.

Question - how long have you had this car, and has the problem only recently come to light?

I've had the car for about six months, and I think its pretty much been the same,I even got two new tyres on the front as I read the original tyres aren't the best, should I just get the car laser aligned, id happy pay the Fourty odd quid if I thought it would cure it but haven't got money to burn if it won't,I didn't think id pay ten grand for a car and be like this, its had rattles, recalls,I wish id kept my old type r

Who did you call to see if the DSG needed a Field Action,

Skoda UK Customer Services or the Dealership.

When was your car First Registered?

Do you know if your car had a ECU Update for the Engine Management at a Service Before you bought it,

or since?

??Have you asked the Dealership or Skoda UK Customer Services what if any Warranty Work has been carried out already on the car?

They can tell you.

I phoned skoda UK, he took reg and said the dsg work wasn't required,it was registered in July 2011 I think, so what should I say?

If its not part of the Service Campaign thats fine.

You are as well to find out what Warranty Work the car has already had,

Just in case it already had a Gearbox, Clutch Packs or Mechatronics Control Unit replaced.

Just enquire as to what the Service & Warranty Records show for before your Ownership.

By Email or in Writing would be best,

then you have a Record of the reply.

I will do that later, ill email them, do you thinkit will have any relevance to the dodgy steering

I recently took my car to local skoda garage to find out what was rattling on it, and after commandeering my car for a full day I was told"can't hear out mate" so I took it to my local mechanic who spotted it in two minutes, and my car is still under warranty for what that's worth

What was that rattle's cause if I may ask?

which local franchise is it? ive had very different results with different techs at both Cumbrian dealerships over the years

  • Author

The rattle was a simple clip on the brake calliper that in nine hours they couldn't diagnose that it was missing, border cars, lillyhall, hopeless

  • Author

Although maybe they didn't even look maybe they were too busy, but I mentioned the steering to the lady in the reception, and she diagnosed it in two seconds, without even looking,, tracking, definitely tracking and it's not covered by warranty, that's £40 who needs edd China

lol i thought as much, some have good service from them and some not so good

about 3 weeks after my last service i went to remove my alloys to put winter alloys on and thought i was never gonna get the wheels off, either they put them on too tight or they never removed them to inspect the thickness of the brake pads (i chanaged from winters to summer alloys only about 6 months previous and i didnt put them too tight). i used to copper grease last time on the bits i could and the winters came off no bother the other week

just makes me suspicious of what they actually do with your car even more so coz it was a Skoda freebie due to my oil issues, suffice to say its not a garage ill ever go back to, once bitten and all that

Edited by the mad monk

I do not take the wheels off to check the pads either,

since its not necessary.

It's a bit of a pain when there your local garage though and Carlisle is the next nearest which is 40 miles away

but George, your then assuming both sides wear evenly, id rather not assume as we all know what assuming can lead to

neil, Carlisle arent any better, told me i needed a new radiator on my mk1, 4 years later it was still fine so imagine if id told them to go ahead and replace it, never needed a drop of fluid to top up and did 40K + more miles

they also told me my alloy blebbing was my fault but a local paint shop told them it was a defect so all in tall their both as bad imho

I did not say i looked from outside only,

just that i do not take the wheels off.

You can see both sides of the discs & the pads when under the car.

Your MOT tester will not be removing wheels.
