vRS lighter problem

Featured Replies

Hopefully someone can set me straight and rescue my scratched hands. My son ripped a gadget out the cigarette lighter and the end got solidly lodged. I started to take the whole unit out figuring I can work at it or replace it that way. After working my way into access it and unplugging the power I realised that that fuse protruding from the side seems to stop the unit popping straight out the top. I've tried turning and pressing it from all angles but can't for the life of me work out how to seperate this and get the thing out. Any suggestions gratefully received.post-117376-0-87565900-1400529071_thumb.jpg

some have a screw in the middle, using AN INSULATED screwdriver (unless you are 100% sure its disconnected!) try loosen it, if it starts getting wobbly, continue

...yes, I've done the old put a screwdriver into your live socket routine... bad idea!

The white block in the photo is the power leads which were removed from the bottom of the lighter. Don't think I can get a screwdriver underneath it though without taking the whole console out :(

just had a look at mine, i think its one of those awkward click together jobs... just a thought, but what is it stuck inside? could long nosed pliers/vacuum cleaner not relieve it?

Nah I tried with long nose pliers first but the remnants of an adapter that was yanked out and snapped just broke apart. I think the whole thing needs replaced really. Checked underneath it now and there's no screw either. I know it has to click together somehow but I'll be damned if I can work out how.

the fuse  on the side is the tiny bulb for lighting up the unit.

the easiest way it take the centre console cover out, then turn it upside down to get at it.

the bulb holder unclips - gently or it WILL break, then you have to prise the entire unit up through the top o the cover to get it out.

been through it when mine stopped working and i got a replacement. which was wrong... came off a jetta, different size :wall:

Thanks Mac. Can't work out how to get the handbrake cover off now though! I did find a repair guide for the mk1 online but it had a different set up. It unhooks at the front on a clip, but I can't get the back end. Seems hinged and the handbrake stops it opening all the way up. Is there a guide somewhere to this?

from memory, I really shouldve taken some photos...

The hand brake cover has a clip thing underneath the grip, you can feel the notch. just flex that out with a flat head screw driver,

then just pull hard to get the cover off. theres only the one thing holding it along with a lot of friction.

the console cover is screwed on in a few places -

Pull out the rear ashtray , theres a torx screw or 2 under it.

Pull out the front Ashtray, and theres a couple of them in there.

Also, in the driver footwell, theres a philips head screw that holds the side of the panel in.

Might be one on the passengers side, wasnt in mine, but mightve just been lost.

I cant remember, but you might have to take off the radio surround, and pop out a couple of torx screws from the bottom section, above the ashtray too.
