Do I actually NEED an aircon service?!

Featured Replies

Okay, I'm just going by the manual which says the interior is not cooled in econ mode, but feel free to argue with Skoda if you like. :)

You're somewhat misinterpreting the manual. Econ will work to cool or heat the cabin to your preferred temp without using the aircon. If you put it on low it will blow as cold as it can without aircon and the same with high, blowing as hot as it can.

Outside temperature is largely irrelevant, nor mentioned, ie if it's 6c outside and you put it on low it will blow 6c air into the cabin.

Yeah, makes sense when you just say econ is what most other cars have as an a/c off button. Wonder why Skoda chose not to just use an a/c sticker on the pre-fl instead like most manufacturers seem to

Yes, that's was my point, so how are you getting those sort of low temperatures cos my climatronic starts at 16 degrees?? The only thing lower than that is simply having air con,... well,... on!

Setting the Climatronic to 16 degrees tells the car to keep the interior temperature at 16 degrees, not blow out air at 16 degrees. It adjusts the air blown in to the cabin to maintain the temperature you set.

not having ac on means it's relying on the outside air temperature to cool the cabin. If it's 20c outside and you set it to 16c it's going to blow 20c. If it's 35c outside and you set it to 16c it's going to blow 35c. If it's 35c outside and you set it to lo it will blow 35c. If it's 4c outside and you set it to 16c it will heat the cabin to 16c, if you set it to low it will blow 4c.

The climate is set by the temperature you set and regulated by the ac if it's warmer than 16c and you want it cooler than 16c. The ac will still work below 16c to condition the air.

Not sure how I can explain this any clearer?

Oh, and put it on low and stick a thermometer in the vents. Should be blowing around 5c

Not much, but that still doesn't make sense. Having said that, I don't really actually care :D

How can it not make sense?

With the ac off it can't cool the cabin down to 16 if you set it at 16 and it's more than 16 outside. Unless the skoda system is magic? It will just hopelessly blow air out the vents at full pelt in the vain hope of cooling it down.

If The ac is on it passes the air it draws in over a refrigerator and cools it down exactly the same as your fridge does with the air which is why it's always hot at the back.

You can't magic cool air, there has to be a process, an exchange of heat. Physics 101.

I don't get how you can turn the air con on and off as there's no seperate switch, but I didn't understand the explanation cos I got bored with reading the 'science' half way through. :D ...my car gets cold when I want it to and hot when I want it to, so that's good enough for me. :)

Massively diverted from original topic, which is what I actually wanted to know.

On pre fl you press econ. On fl you press ac. If you read the extract you posted from the manual you would know this ;)

Has anyone actually paid out on an aircon regas and noticed a massive improvement in cooling or are regasses a waste of money. Let's presume everything is working fine and no holes in rad etc. mine is getting on for 8 yrs old and still cools but I have been in cars where the air con is literally freezing. So should I pay out or not?

More if I understood it, like your posts to the same effect. ;)

I think it's pretty clear, but just in case, to turn the A/C on and off:

Pre-FL - press the ECON button (as illustrated earlier in this thread)

FL - press the A/C button.

With the A/C turned off the air in the cabin will never be able to drop below that of the outside air temperature, regardless of far down you turn the temperature dial.

Agreed, ECON isn't immediately obvious in its purpose.

At least they've fixed it on later models.

There's no consistency between manufacturers with this either. On a friend's elderly Toyota the aircon switch has three settings, 'Off', 'Econ' and 'On'. On that car 'Econ' still runs the aircon but at reduced power.

Earlier this month I had a brand new air con rad fitted as it had 'holes' in it. Paid to have it done at the main dealer I go to and it included total re gas.

However, within two days, there was a very feint whistling noise whilst climate control was on, but not when on econ.

As the days went on, the noise got louder and the air became warmer and during that very hot few days we had, it was very noticeable that it was ****ed again.

Going back into the dealer tonight.

I've got a 61 plate VRS TDI and the aircon doesn't blow cold at all! Is it likely that it needs re-gassing after 2 and a 1/2 years and 46k? Or is it likely to be a problem somewhere?

Many thanks.

Your air con rad is most probably shot or your compressor is gone.

The dealer I have been using told me about my radiator but it's still not working so I will be taking it up with SkodaUK if they think I am paying out more cash.

Had aircon regassed last year at 2 years old. was still blowing cold but didn't seem as good as it had been refrigerant was down to around 75% of full. Full regas and service and back to blowing very cold air again. So in my opinion yes it is worth it.

Just been out, stuck the aircon on to demist the lower front screen.....

...it formed rings of ice around where the air was blowing on the OUTSIDE of the windscreen where it's raining!

6 years old, 60k miles, but I don't think it needs its first regas yet based on that!! :D

jusy got my normfest Viro Air Fresh Plus and it states on the can that it is a disinfection as well as air freshner, it says `` it  eliminates unpleasant odours as well as bacteria, fungi and germs.``

Had a regass on an 07 last year.  The cooling had gone and initally we thought the gas was low which was the problem - but no - new gas and no cooling!

A bit of investigative VCDS'ing later and we thought the compressor shaft had gone - we seemed to still be getting RPM readings for i tut no cooling.  Anyhow the following day all was back to normal and it has been ever since.

Conclusion? - I think a valve in the compressor was stuck and the regas and re-lube was enough to free it off...  so worth it yes - especially as the regas was free given it was one of those 'if it doesn't fix it you don't pay' deals!

Not what the manufacturer said on the support desk, but just passing on what she said.

Mine went back into the dealer last night, so am intrigued to hear what they say today.

Hi Blackspaven, wasn't doubting what you were told just reading what it says on the tin, If I come down with the plague or get galloping dog rot the you won't hear from me again.
