  • I meant pre FL Octy as it has specific benefits for the pre FL maxidot and controllers it seems, but I stand corrected!!!

  • Well it arrived.   Was very easy going in from below. Took 5 mins.   Just a couple of pics to get your taste buds going:       Phil

  • That was me mate but I was helping with the firmware for the simpler PB01 polar unit which allows newer BT modules to work with older pre FL maxidots. They convert the BAP signal from the module to DD

Aw, come on Phil, that "taster" was ages ago! :p

How's the MaxiDot integration? How good is the mirror-drop really?

Sorry guys.

Been away with the motorhome so not had chance to play.

I had a really quick play last night and tried the 0-60 timer.

Haven't tried the mirror drop yet.

Will try switching the Columbus into BAP mode later and see if it still shows up in the Maxidot.

No need to apologise mate, hopefully we all have lives outside of Brisky ;) ;)

Did you have a good trip?

Aye. We sure do. Yes good trip... bloody long drive though when your comfortable top speed is 100 km/h though. Although I did touch 120 km/h at one point!

Just been for a play (excuse the legs... no way I'm wearing jeans today as it's 27c out!):

It works perfectly. You just need to flick the lever to "L" or leave it there and the mirror drops. Very handy and I almost always drop the mirror down when reversing.

I just need to get in touch with them about a small issue with the OPS display. It sometimes works fine and then other times it keeps disappearing and reappearing.

Will see if I can position my camera to record the screen while driving later to show the readouts etc on the screen and may even do a couple of 0-60 runs with the timer again.

I also switched the Columbus to BAP with VCDS and rebooted it. It disappeared from the Maxidot. Then I switched it back to DDP and it reappeared again so it looks like it's a no-go on that one. Weather it something that's possible with a software update though I don't know.

Thanks for the info Phil.

I might think about putting this above the remap on the list of things to do ;) ;)

100kph? If you were in the US there would be a high-speed chase going on ;)

Haha. Like I say that was the max... we were down to less than 50km/h (30mph) on some of the hills :notme:  And could only just maintain about 80km/h or less on most of the other hills on the motorway. Couldn't wait to jump in the car yesterday!

Phil

Regarding the BAP setting on the Columbus, what benefits do you perceive?  I think its the same maxidot wise for pre and post FL so wouldn't be any different would it?

I'm mega-impressed with this kit though, I hadn't realised it did mirror dip too.  I have it on my L&K but courtesy of the electric memory motors in the mirrors accessed via my seat controls.  I know Eddie has put it into his car without seat controls but he added the different mirror motors I believe so how this does it without hardware change is beyond me!!

It was to see if it would convert the BAP signals for those who have fitted an Amundsen to a pre-fl car.

Phil

Oh and I think it's able to do the mirror as the passenger mirror is connected to the CAN system so it's able to control it.

Very clever stuff.

It's also able to increase the number of indicator flashes with one press which isn't normally do-able with VCDS.

Ah got you. It must do for phone as it incorporates the unit I have which allows a better phone module so perhaps it is worth suggesting to auto polar for the Amundsen/rns315 etc.

It must read the x-y position before dipping and return to it after. Do you set some kind of position for the dip when setting it or is it a fixed dip from whatever x-y you start from? Either way you will find ot massively useful for avoiding kerbing when on street parking.

From watching the videos, I think it "records" how long you pushed down for. (IIEC the program sequence was: Start, move mirror, next step, return mirror, Stop) If you raise the mirror after programing and then put it into reverse, it will drop the same amount, but not to the same place. If it could remember the x-y position, you probably wouldn't need to replace the loom to install OE dippers. (Same with HIDs: the loom apparently has an extra wire over halogens, and also explains the dance that the lights go through on startup......so the system knows where the lights are.)

Just my guess though.

Sounds plausible...

  • 1 month later...

Just a little update on the Polar FIS a couple of months on.

I did have a little issue where the PDC/OPS display on the Columbus would only display for a second then disappear. It would also periodically display a warning message that OPS wasn't available at the time.

They have just released an update that fixes all these issues entirely! Very happy.

They have also added a new parameter relating to DSG torque reduction request so will add that to one of my screens and see what that's about.

It's very handy having the extra info up on screen such as the battery voltage and remaining fuel in the tank in litres and actual coolant and oil temperature..

I will be using the built in lap timer on the nurburgring next week!

Anyone considering one I would definitely recommend. Especially given the fully working OPS display now.

I plan to get a premium Bluetooth kit at some point too which the unit will facilitate.

Phil

Was just going to mention that there was an update as I got an email from them, glad to see it helped.  Tempted to upgrade my BT only unit for one although not sure what will happen given I have updated pdc and climatronic controllers already!!

  • 4 months later...

Very interesting bit of kit, but where and how much was it please? Did look through the post, but couldn't see it.

Also how do you go about coding it for your car or is it that smart?

Mine is only a bolero, but would love the screen display back for parking sensors and climate control

I think it is around the 250 mark and should be plug and play, working fine with the Bolero.

Thanks

Probably out of my price range

I got mine for 220 euros.

It's plug and play and codes itself in.

Phil

With the exchange rate that is quite a lot cheaper than when I last looked...

That's really impressive. Shame it wasn't around when I bought the Bolero.

Does the auto dipping mirror work on manuals or just automatics?

Right, mine's installed and running..... :) :)

However....

The english instructions and description leave a lot to be desired, and, whilst waiting for the eldest to appear today, at a standstill with the handbrake on, I can now rev my car all the way to the red, instead of being capped at 3000 rpm

Would be nice to be able to call up the range left on the tank on the screen, then everything I want would be on one screen :) :)

  • 4 weeks later...

Guys is there any cluster/module perquisite for installing Polar FIS Advanced?

It suppose to support Octavia II 2006 but my box doesn't work.

All wiring checked twice, not much to screw up anyway. But I don't see any Polar menu in Maxidot. It just reset itself occasionally.

I wonder what is wrong since there is no official installation manual.

  • Author

Mine got it's panites in a twist at one point, to the point at which it wouldn't respond to anything. In the end I took it out of the care and used a good quality USB cable and re-flashed & factory reset it. Has worked like a dream ever since.

I think you have to hold OK for a few seconds before it comes up in MaxiDot too.

As far as I know there's no prerequisite however, remember, even though you see a white MaxiDot display, it's officially a red one. ;)
