Curbed alloys!

Featured Replies

And mine came from the factory with Dunlops on 18's!

Cheers for all the replies.

There's a place called A1 alloys near to me so I'll try them first, if not then I think short term I'll use chips away and then replace the alloy further down the line.

The guy at the top of the thread seemed happy with his refurb from chips away.

Cheers all

How did you get on with A1 Alloys? I only ask as I did something very similar and don't live too far from Telford!

Thanks

I haven't done anything yet mate not had chance work-wise. I need to get it done soon really!

I had Alloygators fitted to my Gemini's the day after I got the car as I noticed the tyres didn't have the built in raised side walls. ( A bit remiss of Skoda as these alloys are quite prominent). Glad I did as the Gator on the nearside rear has taken a bit of a hammering due to the type of dropped curb at home. Try to take a wide reverse in, but not always possible.

The gators don't seem to clean up as well as they claim, but as they are black they aren't too noticeable. and I have had to knock them back in a few times.

Any idea how much your recommendation would charge? I have slightly kerbed a wheel, in a very similar way to Dale and would like to get it sorted at some point.

For diamond cut wheels depending on damage would require repair + the face to be cut again the re-lacquered.

Are these the 19" Wheel?

Thanks.

Yes, that sounds familiar! I have had a quote from someone else, but haven't done anything about it yet... From what I have been told, the best way to repair is remove the tyre, blast the wheel, repaint the wheel, machine the surface, re-lacquer. My only slight worry is the colour match the original wheel.

No, my wheels are the 18" Gemini.

Thanks,

Matt

I'll speak to the guys tomorrow & obtain a quote.

Ant ;)

Cheers, I'll look forward to it.

Can you let me know on this too please Ant.

18" anthracite Gemini.

Ah, all you new Octy vRS owners with your fancy diamond cut alloys :D

Make the most of them whilst you can. The manufacturers design them so that they last 3 years to the day, then immediately after they begin to delaminate.

The Proteus on the MkII Octavia Scout, the Gigaro on the Fabia vRS and the Thermisto on the Superb all suffer from delamination.

The highly polished surface only has a covering of laquer, no paint, so the smallest stone chip, hairline scratch, kerbing, new tyres etc. etc. allows water to get under the laquer which then corrodes the alloy.

This...

...turns into this after a few winters...

Haha! I have seen the issues with those alloys! But my car is on a 3.5 year PCP deal, so it may be Skoda's problem eventually.

If anything awful happens to mine I may well do something similar to what you guys are doing and get rid of the polished bit! But until then, I intend to enjoy mine as they are :P

But will delaminated wheels be classed as fair wear and tear?

You may have a point there Andy, I guess I will find out nearer the time. I am not too worries about it currently though :)

It could be interesting though as the dealership that sold me my Octavia certainly won't be getting a second order from me.
