Is it safe to remap?

Featured Replies

Looking for some advice on getting my 06 fabia vrs remapped, It has 94k mileage and totally standard, but it does have a slight whistle/siren noise.. im assuming its the turbo but i am doing a full check on boost leaks etc this coming weekend. Is this safe to remap? assuming everything else is sound.

Any advice would be great :)

As long as you don't go crazy on the remap and exceed what is recommended, bear in mind that a big increase in ponies will put extra strain on the clutch and a higher demand on the turbo.

I am no expert on remapping - only what I have read.

From what I have learnt you should be fine as long as the remap isn't anything too extreme. A lot of people have remapped there furbys completely standard and never had a problem. However there are many others who have. Will always be the case I suppose.

I am sure someone with much more experience in the matter will be a long shortly ;)

thanx for your advice! i dont plan on going mental with the remap anyway, just wanted to make sure that im not remapping a knackered turbo.

If the turbo is on the way out it'll give up at some point anyway.

You may just cause that to happen sooner if you remap.

If you do remap for heaven sake use a decent person/company because otherwise you'll get a torque spike and/or a plume of black smoke out the back when driving briskly.

Neither of which is particularly good.

well.. i had it on the rolling road a few weeks back to check if it was already remapped because i wasnt sure... it was showing 150bhp but the normal standard torque, the guy said that can happen due to sticky blades and is sure that its still standard. ive recently had a flush of the engine which cleans is said to clean up your turbo.

which is why im a bit funny about getting a remap at the moment but i am wanting a little more power BUT i am in no rush :)

150bhp is probably standard.

They often make around 140 rather than the 130 they should and a bit more could be dyno error on working out the wheel figure and guessing the flywheel figure.

My 255 once made 285 on a dyno.

A remap on a car is always a risk.

What is likely to fail is the turbo and the clutch/dual mass flywheel, both of which are relatively routine swaps on cars approaching 10 years of age and six-figure mileages.

If it was me, I'd get Ben Wardle at Shark to do the remap. You don't need to go to Mansfield as they can send you a box you connect to the OBD port but on a car you're not sure of, better let the remapper see the car before you put the map on it.

If its a BLT engine, the Turbo is telling you its tired

My KKK turbo went on my BLT at 84k and only wined when cold, but shaft snapped when pulling away from a roundabout.

What you also have to keep in mind is that it won't matter how good the map is if you drive it like you stole it everywhere! Lol I would say extra wear and tear would be minimal with a relatively steady driving style.
