  • same could be said for the GT moniker.   I Drove a Golf GT once (not a GTI), nothing remotely relating to GT cars or sporty pretensions other than a set of alloys.   A GT -     Not a GT -

Thankyou.  It's good to see someone knows what they actually are.  I'm not getting into justifying the Igins, but someone once said to me that if you have to ask what it is then you shouldn't be asking.

...and quite successfully too iirc.

Looked almost 'out of the showroom too which was a bonus.

Nice little car that justified its 'SPORT tag imo.

Another epic 'FAIL imo, only it didn't actually use the word 'SPORT' was the Citroen C4 ' By Loeb' (iirc) with 'special decals'  :dull:

Give me the strength of a thousand rampaging Wilderbeast.  :notme:

If I remember correctly they even did a diesel version of the C4 Loeb.

I must be in the minority here then.

I quite like the 'sheep in wolf's clothing' attitude towards a cars appearance.

The Fabia Monte Carlo is a perfect example, it benefits from all the external appeal of the vRS but with an affordable / insurable engine / performance.

Bodykits, bigger alloys and spoilers make absolutely no difference to your ability to get to the office and back again so why shouldn't the manfacturers fit them to their smaller engined cars?

To me 'Sport' is just another trim level, just like SE, Elegance and Laurin & Klement etc.

Sport = cosmetic bling and long let it continue!

What Skoda should do is fit the vRS engine and brakes to the Octavia and Fabia S models? Yeah, I'm sure they'd sell well

My brother had a mk2 focus tdci 'sport'

It was sporty because

3 spoke steering wheel

16" alloys

That was it! Oh and a sport badge on the back

Bmw Sports too.. most of them are diesel FFS!!

So was a certain car that won Le Mans last year iirc? :notme:

I know crazy

How could a 335d ever be sporty :o

Or a 640d coupe

Nothing sporty about either of those

Bmw m-sport the list can go on.

It's another supply and demand thing.

At least they have revised suspension and geo settings. More than many.

I used to hate the sport tags, but if it improves the appearance and more importantly, the seats, i can live with it.

Is it one of those hilarious 1.6 Zetec affairs with the rear diffuser?

My brother has the worst one though (not through his choice)

A Renault scenic "sport"

Skoda are in the business of selling cars so presumably they make these versions because they sell.

I appreciate that we are given the option of something that looks better inside and out than the bog standard versions without having to buy the more expensive and less economical RS versions, not really bothered what they're called.

90% of the time its either illegal or impossible to use the extra performance of an RS anyway.

But often in the UK they do not sell in Numbers, or in the rest of the world.

Skoda Spin the great sales guff.

Sometimes the sales are better than the Sister Brand models,

but the VWG are never heard saying they got it wrong.

So lets forget the only 2,800 Mk2 Fabia vRS in the UK in 4 years,

& half sales in the UK for the Polo GTI mk5. Ibiza Cupra, & only 500 Audi A1 185 ps

Sold or First Registered, you never know if they are selling or registering, and iys used cars that are sold.

The Fabia Monte Carlo needed a Cheaper Tech Version introduced to boost sales last year,

the Roomster has grinded to a halt in sales.

Skoda need to maybe concentrate on reliability, and not advertising and spinning reliability.

Get the dealerships to even know what is and is not on the model range that already is on offer.

& sort out the Black Hole Ordering system,

TV & Media adverts are all good and well, if they can supply the cars in a timely manner.

It is going to be interesting to see how Skoda UK try to spin the DSG Faults and the Silent Service Campaign on the DSG's.

Once they ever bother giving out press releases & then maybe Extend Warranties like they did in the Countries where Customer Pressure Forced them to.

Apply for a job? /\

Like If you cant beat them join them ?

They are Salespeople. seldom car enthusiasts.

The Brand Director of Skoda UK Alasdair Stewart needs to get his employees and customer services a bit more clued up on cars and Customer Services.

If they were less full of taking the bull **** line and considered the current Skoda Buyers

they might sell more cars.

Need to revise their prices too.

IMHO the Fabia VRS lost it's USP between Mk1 and 2.

Should have stayed with diesel. A 140/170hp 2.0 Fabia diesel would have sold loads but nabbed sales from the Octy and other VWs I suppose

Diesel will die one day... they are too dirty &gunk themselves up, not great at emissions and release huge plumes of NO2 into the atmosphere in larger cities.

This is why electric is going to take over, probably when we are all jostling up the road with zimmer frames.

Then this discussion will be aimed at Sport Electrics. I know the Tesla project with allow the name tag.

But often in the UK they do not sell in Numbers, or in the rest of the world.

For a manufacturer, the beauty of the Sport/Monte type models is that they don't cost extra to develop as there are little or no mechanical changes.

I would imagine those ranges have created extra sales - pretty sure quite a high percentage of Fabia MC buyers wouldn't have bought a bog standard Fabia?

Is this the place to point out that BMW have just produced a sub-range called the "Gran coupe"?

Was it BMW who coined the phrase though?  If so, I guess then can do what they want with the name as it isn't pretending to be anything else other than a Gran Coupe.  Mind you, it initially conjures up images of elderly ladies with blue rinses in coupe cars, not vehicles that are able to whisk you to the south of France in Germanic luxury.  Maybe not what BMW had in mind?

Probably, and yes that is very much the image I get.

As silly at it may seem, it works very well. See also all the fake 4x4s, most of which don't even have 4 driven wheels and almost all of which couldn't go further offroad than a kerb. People like to feel they have more than a dreary shopping trolley for a car and so these cheap lookalikes fly off forecourts.
