'Sport', the word gets lost in translation with Skoda, Not even Sporty Looks.

Featured Replies

Really Skoda needs to stop using the 'Sport' tag on just any old version of the cars they build IMO.

& then the use of 'Monte Carlo' is weird,

a tribute because of a Motorsport Heritage seems like its a pith take when used with vehicles with the likes of 105 ps.

If they at least gave them an inspiring and competent handling,  decent suspension,

but Skoda seem to think adding Tat and their idea of Sporty Looks are all that is required rather than

an improved driving experience or 'Sports' type handling or improved performance.

  • same could be said for the GT moniker.   I Drove a Golf GT once (not a GTI), nothing remotely relating to GT cars or sporty pretensions other than a set of alloys.   A GT -     Not a GT -

  • No worries.  Maybe I was a bit touchy about it anyway.    As for the whole badge thing it reminds me of the Zetec era.  For a while it referred to the engines which were pretty good at the time.  T

I thought Skoda's idea of "sport" was sporty seats.

If you look at all the sport models from the mk1 Fabia onwards that seems to pretty much sum it up.

That and maybe alloys.

They should bring out ones called 'SPEEDS'  Editions,

'Special Produced Edition Expecting Extra Dealership Sales', (of a poor selling Model.)

or more 'limited number 'Techs', were they give you more and drop the price to get the Sales figures up

because they had them priced too high in the first place.

It's not just Skoda who are guilty of this.  It annoys me too when a car is marketed as a sporty version and it clearly isn't.  I suppose that most manufacturers save their actual quick versions and put their own badges on such as vRS, RS VXR etc.  This keeps the masses happy as the average Joe on the street who buys a 'Sport' feels like they have got a sporty car and the petrol headed geeks like me can buy the actual quick car with the correct badge on.  Everyone's a winner.

Sport in the sence that Tiddly winks is essentially a sport, but its no sky diving!

Skoda aren't alone in using Sport on a version with standard mechanicals and go faster trim and options.
It's a nice insurance friendly option for those that want something that looks a bit more interesting than a standard car but don't want to pay the extra costs for a VRS/VXR/GTI etc.

Another dumming  down , politically incorrect used word .(SPORT)

Need to get the EU on the Skoda case!

Selling under a false description!

Is that what happened to the vRS.

Is that what happened to the vRS.

No 'RS' is a trade mark owned by Ford so Skoda couldn't use it in the UK anyway.

They started using it on the MK1 Fabia to entice younger drivers who liked the vRS but couldn't get insured on the performance cars...

SPORT = Sporty looks but affordable to all

Suppose it all depends on how you define the word 'SPORT'.

Has a hundred different meanings.

Tiddlywinks can be a 'SPORT' I suppose. :notme:

Well it can if playing darts is.

I think most people have accepted 'Sport' means a body kit, alloys and some coloured trim on the inside (alloy pedals) and an asthmatic 1.2 or 1.4 under the bonnet which 10yr later teenage eejits will spend thousands on trying to eek out an extra 10hp, and make turbo fart noises.

I'm yet to see the Koenesigg CCX Sport

Although they do have a GT.... It's got a 1.9 diesel.

Not a GT -

I would call that a GT, It has the mighty 2.0 petrol engine, in it?

..........now you just know that this thread could upset Citigo Sport afficianados because that model is more sporty than other variants & of course the Monte Carlo versions of all Skodas are very very sporty.

A GT needs to look slick.

That looks like a borefest driven by a junior estate agent.

I see no problem putting a 1.2l 68bhp petrol engine in a Fabia and calling it a 'Sport' :wonder: ,,,

:wait:

Seat have done similar, with the FR (formula racing) spec.

It was formerly slightly milder Cupras but still sports spec.

Now available as purely a trim thing on any engine :(

Suzuki Ignis "Sport"?

Bmw m-sport the list can go on.

It's another supply and demand thing.

Nissan Micra 160 Sport? No, not 160 bhp, 1.6l, a bit misleading IMO.

Wtf! 1600 sport should be what they called it that's just misleading otherwise!

Suzuki Ignis "Sport"?

It's a reasonable attempt, but misses the mark.  Have a read up on them and get back to me.

At least they were actually rallied.

Thankyou.  It's good to see someone knows what they actually are.  I'm not getting into justifying the Igins, but someone once said to me that if you have to ask what it is then you shouldn't be asking.
