More to the point, I don't think anyone is reading this thread and being put off using them.

Oh and before you ask yes I have experience with dealing with insurance companies and how *some* will say something is in the paperwork when it isnt. Thats why you ALWAYS check the paperwork and if it doesnt match what you were told by phone, you ring and have it amended or cancel the policy within the cancellation period. Keeping paperwork for a couple of years is also a good idea for exactly this scenario. Not checking the policy and paperwork would have cost me in excess of £40,000 over just one policy............. 

I am not sure of the business practices other brokers employed at that time or the advice and guidance they offered to customers.

 

I could imagine that other brokers chose different 'underwriters' or gave advice that would help a customer make an informed choice.

 

I have stated what the broad facts are and offer this to members to make an informed choice - I paid the equivalent of approx. £1200 for an annual policy quoted at approx. £500 - I accept there were additional costs but those made were completely out of proportion and unreasonable.

In the sense that you said yes in answer to an either or question.

 

I think we can agree you have an axe to grind against CK and feel aggrieved, but starting threads on different websites (which is what appears to be happening) after such a length of time seems unlikely to resolve anything.

We all learn lessons. If I can't read or understand terms, I don't sign them.

 

I've modified the title as technically they didn't 'rip you off'. Would not like to see any liablious contentions arising to agitate the open wound.

 

The problem of late, is the culture of 'price'. Which over the last decade has driven displayed prices right down. It's only logical business day to day costs remain constant, or rise; inflation, yet price paid by consumer is under pressure to be as low as possible.

 

So following logic, companies reach for admin costs to cover their admin. How they do it and what they charge are in the terms. Right or wrong this incident is over 8 years ago. Was legal for the time in so far as I can see, just really annoying for you to have fallen foul of it. Different companies have different approaches. When I was insured with the NFU, I had to call in office hours to make amendments. Different co I could call up at 3am to add a driver... I pay for that, but not the NFU alterations... each company has their way.

 

It's wise to raise, on a basis of checking terms, that it is really important to check, nothing else.

 

The rest I'd say you have to begin to move on, life is too short sir.

From what I understand

Someone was very happy to agree to something 6 years ago, then their circumstances changed and the cancellation part of the agreement came into effect, and then they weren't happy about it.

 

Hmm, there was an unforeseen change in circumstances and it is desired that the insurance broker bends over backwards to re-negotiate the contract for an immediate, no penalty, release.

 

 

I've been aware, ever since first getting car insurance some 22 years ago, that things are not proportionate, or pro-rata when it comes to the money side of things. I've also been aware that a broker is the middle-man and has no control over circumstances at either end. Had it been known about emigrating at the time, then I daresay any broker would take this into account when looking for a deal. The circumstances were correct and current at the time of signing the agreement. Any adjustment to those circumstances or the cancellation of the contract is covered in the T&Cs. If those T&Cs are not read, not clear, not not agreeable, then the contract should not have been signed. If the print was too small (what else would you expect "Small Print" to mean?) it's not hard to ask for a larger point-size to be used, unless one's vanity would be offended.

 

 

 

I have to wonder how many people actually read the T&Cs on their Microsoft Windows license before ticking the "I have...." box.

We all have different opinions (which I respect)  and this is mine.

 

Indeed, thing is we dont all go round banging our drum, starting threads making accusations and blabbering about them in the hope someone will agree. 2 threads so far and I cant see many others in agreement. With all due respect, I would suggest being 8 years ago, drop it and find another hobby. :D

Is that an example of the font type needed for you to be able to read the small print of your insurance documents?

I got my insurance through Chris Knott as brokers. Funnily enough I read the terms and conditions of my insurance within the first 14 days which included the cancellation policy........ I was happy with they company I was insured with - unsurprisingly this wasnt chris knott but was Highway as part of LV (Liverpool Victoria). I've been with LV before for car insurance but I still checked the policy over.

 

If you cant read the small print ask them to send you a large print copy for those who may have sight problems. 

 

Its your own responsibility to read the terms and conditions of the contracts into which you enter. If you dont bother to do that dont go crying to mummy that the nasty people wrote in something which you now dont like! Christ I learnt that about dealing with insurance companies by the time I was 18..........

 

 

+1 Car insurance is something I specifically would never dream of not reading over properly. Person in the link in post1 who had the drama etc agreed to terms they didn't read then didn't honor the commitment they made....... Word of the day 'retard' springs to mind.
