Overhead/Roof mounted DVD player....anyone have one?

Featured Replies

I am thinking of installing a roof mounted DVD player in my Mk2 Octavia. I had one in a previous car and now really miss it.

However the Octavia has a large 'hump' in the headlining that runs quite far into the back of the car which is causing me headaches with regards to installation. The headlining hump is far from strong enough to mount the dvd player to and if I mount it behind the hump the screen will be a bit too far back and would probably be too close to the rear occupants.

I'd be interested to know it anyone has one of these installed and if so how did the installer deal with the 'hump' problem?

Not much of an answer sorry but there was an L&K Octavia for sale 2.5 years or so ago with one in it and pictures. I remember as it was around the time I was looking for one but too far away for me to go and see. I remember it being very big. Shouldn't be too hard to find on a search as not many L&Ks come up.

Edit, here it is:

I seen a flip down DVD player for the octavia on Fleabay last year, think it was from a Skoda dealer just trying to offload it. Big and cumbersome thing ! It was around the £100-£150 mark new but if ordering from a dealer will be pricier I would imagine. I'm going with twin screens headrest mounted, saves 2 kids fighting over one screen !

Thanks for that! Very helpful. I've also just been on autotrader to search for Octavias with roof dvd and found a couple more.

There seems to be some sort of Skoda system (the one in the above link has this I think) that is fitted in place of the rear lights. It deals with the hump by having a large plastic surround that presumably can be cut to accommodate the hump in the roof.

On autotrader I found a car with a very neat solution where the roof dvd is mounted in a cut hole in the hump, just forward of the rear lights. Looks neat but screen size will be limited to keep the unit small enough to fit within the confines of the width of the hump.

Yes, it looks quite bulky. But this would be a necessity to allow for the large hump in the roof. I'll investigate a flush mount system that could fit in a hole cut into the hump. I did consider headrest mounted players, but I like the simplicity of the roof mounted units.

Thanks for your input guys.

No worries, be interested in the results if you get anywhere.

The Seat Altea XL has this as an extra.

I've thought about this and have just resolved to getting an ipad with a headrest mount instead. Far more functionality...

I sort of have a setup like this with a cheap portable dvd player. I really want a permanently installed setup.

Just done some more digging and here are the two types of install I have found.

I like the first one, but wonder if the screen might be a bit too far forward......It would be bad at night if it was in front of your eye line and also possibly illegal.

I prefer the first one too, much tidier. But certainly if you are tall it would be hard to keep your seat far enough forward to keep it out of your line of sight I would think.

The second photo is the one I've seen. Looks like a portaloo stuck to the roof lining, or something from the 70s !

Yes, It's very bulky.....I wonder if the unit itself is actually quite old. All the newer units you can buy now are much more slimline that that thing.....even ones with 15" screens!

Looks like it could be mounted another inch or so further back. There is also the possibility of doing away with the rear interior light and mounting it much further back, although that would depend on actually getting clearance between the lining and the roof to get the unit in there.

I think the next stage is to get the rear light out and see what clearance there is and see what units might fit in there.

Would headrest versions be an option?

We just bought a dual setup for £80 from Currys. They are logik and can be used separately or together. Only thing is the cables, but we will be taking them out each time.

i must admit I did look at the head liner and think it would be perfect for a diy job, but didn't fancy it  :D

I have the second one, it means no lights in the back which is annoying, but I will soon be taking it out and adding a light switch and a headphone jack to help with these issues.

Nah. I already have a cheap headrest mounted dvd player and it's a bit of a pain taking it all out every time you park the car, and as you say the cabling is a complete mess.

I did consider the in headrest style players, but it is a tricky install (even if you buy pre-done after market headrests, routing the wiring is tricky) and could get expensive by the time you fit a multi disc dvd changer under the seat.
