Dash Cam

Featured Replies

I'm looking to get a dash cam (front and back) to cover myself just encase and just wondered if anyone is able to recommend a particular make/setup?

I did see a great set up on here (the forum) unfortunately I'll be damned if I can find it. It involved an Audi Q5 changing lanes when actually indicating.

Any thoughts?

The way i see driving standards going down in this country as i see so many idiots and near misses during the week i think having a dash cam is the way to go.

That's why I fitted one a few weeks back, don't think I go a day without using my horn.

I bought a cheap one first off.  It didn't last long, and packed up without telling me it had.

I've a Blackvue 400 up front and a 300 as rear gunner.  Both hardwired into my fuse box.  Fit 'em and forget 'em, although I do now check them once in a while.

Wouldn't be without either.

I have a pair of Blackview 400s, as above fit and forget, until you need the video.  recording cycles through the SDcard with the oldest being overwritten.

Full HD - caution many are only 720p rather than 1080p and the difference is huge.  You really do get what you pay for.

Despite any dash can rerecording/cycling through the SD card again and again I strongly reccomend taking the card out and reformatting it from time to time to ensure that when you need the footage it's there.

I do it every three months out of habit.

In my experience on work vehicles being used for six hours per day, between four and eight months errors creep in with constant looping and they stop recording all the time.  You just get the odd bit now and again which isn't great if you have a bump and need it.

Never even thought about that. Thanks for pointing it out Richard

Never thought about that, with regards to the likes of the Blackvues with settings set to whatever with regards to sensitivity for 'incident' recording. I assume these files are then write protected and not over written during loop recording? So after a while you would basically run out of space, especially if it's left on standard settings?

Spot on! Which becomes an issue around here as the roads are so rough that they trigger really easily but still would only just sense a crash on those settings!

Thanks for the replies all, been too busy to check the site since posting.

Looks like I'll be going for a blackvue set up in the near future, going with the thought of "buy cheap buy twice" plus I I drive for over three hours a day it makes sense to get a good set up.

Cheers again

Replaced a cheap £30 Chinese setup with a £329.99 DR550GW 2channel hardwired Blackvue system so much better quality and a really good setup IMO

The reviews are still commenting on the low bitrate and pixilisation as a result on the 2 channel one, what have you found so far? Close objects (especially trees) were the biggest issue foe me. :(

Well yesterday I had to pull a sharp stop on a corner (sheep crossing) and a van came flying up behind me inches of the back of the car and it was very clear to see in the cab and clear number plate on approach! Bit blurry at times but unsure if that was the rain!

No.

I believe the road hawk saves "event" files to a seperate folder while the Blackvue just highlights them in red (instead of green) in the normal time line.

So the latter probably overwrites them along with the other files.

A roadhawk RH2 in my works van just saved them into one folder but I think it protected those triggered by the remote and also the g sensor however I'd find the camera card became corrupt after 4/5 months and had to be formatted! Now do it every other month!

However iirc when there is no space and more g sensor / button events are triggered it overwrites the old ones!

When formatting the Blackvue's card am I right in thinking you don't lose all the settings as it'll just copy them back to the newly formatted card?

When you change the optional settings on a Blackvue it uploads these to the camera unit when you next put the card back in.

So, when you reformat or put a blank card in it'll copy the base files onto it including your previous settings.

Thought so, cheers.

Surprised no one has mentioned mobious camera. Really happy with mine for £50 :)

Bye bye windscreen!:

There are a lot of options, so not everything gets mentioned every time dash cams are spoken about, as there are a lot of threads.

But I know a few people using them that seem happy.

That twin camera setup you have, I have read that the coaxial cable causes problems with the DAB radio. Can you confirm this please, because I'm currently torn between the Blackvue DR550GW - 2CH with 2 cameras & the Blackvue DR500GW with one which seems to have other issues.

Then again there's the Roadhawk HD.
