clutch exploded !

Featured Replies

Hi. I need advice please. I drive (well did!!) a 1.9 TDI Octavia 51 reg. The gears had been getting a bit more difficult the last 2 weeks. Reverse took some coaxing. Also, once in a while a very loud, tinny noise when I started the car. Like metal on metal. Anyway on Saturday it would seem the clutch exploded ! metal filings in the engine bay. No pressure behind the clutch pedal.

No on doing research it seems it has a "dual mass fly wheel". I'm getting scared cause people tell me it will cost lots of money and is not worth doing.

What do you guys think ? ever had one go ? is it difficult to do yourself (my dad is a mechanic, but an ageing one!)?

I await your positive comments !!??

Firstly, I think you've destroyed the friction plate and possibly the thrust bearing!

It might, or might not, need a new flywheel. The only way to find out is to take the gearbox off and look. If it does, then you can either fit a new DMF or convert it to an SMF.

Although many have converted to SMF with little or no apparent problems, the diesel engine produces a lot more vibration than the petrol so if you want to risk the engine receiving little or no damping from an SMF then this is the cheap way to go. Otherwise, DMF and clutch, including fitting, is going to be north of £500 from an indy. But the DMF might be fine so new clutch only.

Do some reading on the SMF though. I was tempted when I needed mine doing but decided against it as I want to keep the car as long as possible. Don't forget the car is designed to use a DMF. Good iuck
