VW Sqeezes another 10bhp out of the PD TDI engine

Featured Replies

Well, that diesel engine is rumoured to be offered in the new Octavia vRS so that part is old news I'm afraid, but the 1.4 twin turbo petrol

Not a twin turbo, but twin charger - single small supercharger and larger turbo for top end to reduce/eliminate lag

the twin charger engine looks very interesting, i wouldnt mind a look when it comes out :)

Sorry to be pedantic, but it's the 2.0 TDI (not the 1.9) so it's actually up from 140 to 170bhp.

I was considering buying this model when it was rumoured that it would have the GTI body and be badged GTD, but it doesn't look special enough now IMO. I'll be buying a 'proper' GTI instead!

It'll be interesting to see how well the 170 bhp engine performs. I think the main differences over the 140bhp model is the use of quieter piezo injectors and a re-map. Haven't heard of successful a re-map for 140 which doesn't make it a dog to drive so i'm keen to see how VAG have acheived it.

bigger turbo maybe? like they did on the older PD's?

You'd know better than I would. I suppose they would need something physically quantifiable to justify the extra cost. So as you say, maybe bigger turbo. Time will tell.

That 1.4 really looks very interesting. Very inventive use of a compressor and a turbo combined, should be excellent to drive :)

Was thinking that myself. Supercharged AND turbocharged!

might be good scope for tuning ;)

The furby would be a perfect candidate for that 1.4 although I notice the torque is about 25% down on the 2.0 TDi. It's VW getting ready for the introduction of EU V standards

I notice they are raving about the particulate filter in the new 170bhp golf TDi on that vwvotex site like as if it gives the engine better performance or it's a big deal or something.

I mean to my knowledge the OctyII 140 TDi has a particulate filter already but the equivalent Golf V 140 doesn't.

Yet the Octy has exactly the same torque and power as the golf only it emits up to 90% less particulates thanks to the filter. The golf's just a bit lighter and so falls in just below the EU IV maximum particulate emissions without needing a filter.

why does it always have to come down to this

maybe just me

torque isn't the be all and end all of a cars performance ya know

Way to go Bengie

:D

either is Skoda having it before VW.......mine is better than yours

don't matter cos my dad can beat your dad up :P

I know, i'm sorry. I'm birching myself right now over that comment.

:)

Yes it is - I read it on here :P:rofl:

Chris

Either way - regardless of brand, that 1.4 is an impressive engine on paper at least.

Most of these supercharger based things just eat away power 'just to run them' - the drive system described looks ace :)

With the additional bonus of having torque AND a reasonable rev range it should be pretty nippy in real life situation as well as possibly on the track, who knows :)

It wouldnt surprise me if this technology went 'up the range' if it works well enough, as it seems like they've solved a few fundamental problems with superchargers AND turbos in a very nice way :D
