First MOT.

Featured Replies

Hi all, my Octavia had its first MOT today and passed. Just got some strange advisory information just wondered if anyone has come across it before.

1 Emissions too clean for smoke meter to pick up.

2 Under-trays fitted obscuring some underside components.

3 Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine.

After receiving the mot approval paper, if you get one, i would tell the inspector to shove if his a@@ and have a little chat with the person in charge at mot center to tell him how incompetent this particular worker is. Never again would go back to that mot center

I'm not sure I understand alberg, but the comments are very common on modern cars during MOT's.

Diesels do not undergo an emissions check, they have a soot test only. A probe is inserted up the tail pipe, the car is revved and the soot deposits measured.

Your profile doesn't say what engine you have but I'm assuming you have either the 1.6 CR105 or 2.0 140CR or 170CR, both of which are equipped with DPF's (Diesel Particulate Filters). These are designed to trap the soot and burn it off resulting in no soot escaping from the exhaust.

The MOT tester is simply covering his back by explaining the '0' result.

Same with the notes on the undertray and engine cover. MOT testers are not allowed to remove parts of the car to aid the inspection, so anything hidden by these trays and covers cannot be examined or checked. Again he is simply covering his back.

I had the same on my mot slip just standard white up mate

I get a #2 every time [fnar fnar].

Just means they can't see without removing the covers and as said they're covering their ass. Same with the zero reading I assume it's to provide assurance that the equipment was working ok.

One thing the "MoT" does not do is provide evidence of a vehicle's condition -- it just checks certain roadworthiness issues. You wouldn't expect a properly maintained three-year-old car to fail (assuming you check regularly for blown bulbs!).

Thanks Guy's

First i apologize for the words written.

Over this way goes like this.

1. All vehicle with cat converter or fap have low fuel emissions. Mine went to the mot test last month and on 3 registrations needed the value was 0,00,0,01,0,01% of CO2

Max value is 3%. My megane mapped and no cat gave values around 0,80%.

2. Undertrays if came originally must be their, they were made for some reason, aerodynamic i think and to capture any oil leak, in this case road pollution as oil won't drop on pavement or soil. My friend on his A4 had to buy the understray as was destroyed in an accident and failed at mot test for not having it.

3. Ours have the engine tray, it has reason to be there. Por example existes makes that remove or doesn't conw with it on lower end versions.

You wouldn't expect a properly maintained car of any age to fail.

They're exactly the things that I would advise.

For the smoke test it's either that or keep revving the engine to make it produce something. I can't see the point of needlessly revving the engine so just follow the procedure in the manual.

The covers hide testable items and the advisories for them are pre written and just need selecting, it's an easy uniform way of saying that some of the testable bits couldn't be inspected.

The Portuguese test is different to our test in that different emissions are checked and the test starts at 4 years old and is bi annual upto 7 years old.  It may appear incompetent by your experience, but it has been done by the book and I know that I'd rather have annual testing from a safety point of view.

I've had 3 year old low mileage dealer maintained cars fail their first MOT.

If there are testable bits under the covers then how can they issue a cert if they haven't been tested ? I've had a "child seats fitted" one as well. The most annoying one is when your car fails for a magic tree on the mirror !!

I suppose you could always present your car for the test inside one of these:

'Sorry it's all under a cover this year.............can I have my pass certificate please?'

They have to assume it's alright as they can't see it to test it.

If you were to remove every item that is restricting access to a testable item you'd be there forever and a day!

The under body covers prevent being able to see parts of the fuel + brake lines and any chassis corrosion. If you can't see it's goosed on a test, you can't fail it on the basis that it might not be ok. If that was the case a car would never get passed on the "what if" something is wrong scenario.

Might have to do that with the Fabia later this year :notme:
