Oh dear! I think a new tyre is needed!

Recommended Posts

I returned from work in Abergavenny today, parked in the drive and saw this in the front offside tyre.  As it's in the sidewall, I'm sure it can't be repaired.

The front tyres were renewed only about 1,000 miles ago.  My biggest problem is that I'm going to Market Harborough in Leicestershire on Sunday and I'm not sure if I can get another Goodyear FI Eagle tyre tomorrow.

Has it gone through i.e. is the tyre going down?

Yes, I thought it may be a small tack that hadn't gone right through the tyre, but as I started to remove it, air was coming out, so I put it back in quickly.  The local tyre depot is only a few minutes drive, so I'll ask them first when they open at 8:00 tomorrow morning.  As long as the tyre looks OK, I'll drive down slowly as it's only on backstreets.  If the tyre gets damaged, it won't matter.  Maybe I'll have to fit another make, but I don't want to if I can help it.

Oh dear..... Maybe if you ring around first thing in the morning one of them will be able to get hold of one at some point tomorrow....

Hope you get it sorted.

Cheers

Dave.

Do not get that repaired it will be dangerous, it's in the most stressed area of the tyre, I currently have one about 3/4 of an inch further in the tyre myself and even that isn't really repairable,

Curve your hand as if you were holding a small beaker, then imagine a flat plug patch trying to stay stuck on around the area of your knuckles.

I've been to our local tyre depot and they can repair it!  But it's a specialised repair that has to be sent away and that'll take about 10 days before it's back.

I've bought an Avon ZZS for my journey tomorrow and Monday and I'll change back to the Goodyear when it's been repaired.  I'll keep the Avon and then buy one more when the rear tyres need changing.  I'd have preferred to keep all 4 tyres the same, but I'm not too worried so long as both axles have matching tyres.  It's like that now with replacement Goodyears on the front and the original Continentals on the back.

If they can send it away and get it repaired do that and keep it for next time assuming they don't need the wheel as well.

Yes, I asked them to send it off for repair and they'll give me a call when it's returned.  I want to put in back on the front when it's been repaired so I've got matching tyres on the front axle.

Not sure, I'll let you know when it's returned.  Hopefully less than a new tyre!

I went to Ian Jones Tyres in Brecon.  I've used them for years and they know me, so I trust them.

Why didn't you simply mount your spare wheel? Or, if you didn't already have one, use the money you paid for the tyre to buy a spare wheel (16" steel rim and tyre will be approximately the same price as this big tyre).

Penpusher's tyre looks like an 18" Sirius. Spare, if there is one, would probably be 16" at best. I've tried that myself before and it's not ideal on any kind of a long journey.

I've run a 16" steel spare in place of an 18" alloy for almost a week on my 65 mile each way commute and noticed no difference at all.

That's the beauty of the Skoda spares, they are standard steels and not skinny spares.

I was going away overnight with a jouney of about 350 miles and the space saver was of no use over that distance.  It's typical that if it had happened at nearly any other time, I would have been fine on the space saver driving about 3 miles per day going to and from work (including going home for lunch!).

As I had to resolve the situaion on Saturday morning, I wouldn't have had time to get another wheel and tyre as Andrehj mentions and Brecon is only a small rural market town with little chance of buying a wheel that would fit.

As Superb170 says, my wheels are Sirius (I assume yours are too?).  On my return jouney today, the back seats were folded down and the back of the car was full with all sorts of things (some were quite heavy) and it was sitting low at the back.  I wouldn't want to travel any distance with the space saver.

As I mentioned the standard spare wheel on the Superb isn't a space saver, it is a full sized 16" steel wheel.

These are the same as the wheels that Skoda use for winter tyre use.

The fact that some people prefer not to drive at speed or over long distances with a smaller rim and higher profile tyre on one corner is understandable, all I was saying is that I covered over 500 miles on mine and never noticed any difference at all...

  • 2 weeks later...

How much is that costing btw?

£30.00, including refitting and balancing.  I had it done first thing this morning at Ian Jones Tyres in Brecon and I'd recommend them to anyone in the area.

Not cheap, but better than throwing way an expensive tyre with only 1,000 miles of wear.  Anything much past 50% worn or a cheap tyre and it wouldn't be worth repairing.
