Folding! Whats happened?

Featured Replies

The weekly amount is nipping back up to 50,000 a week. I still think some of the top folders are taking a break though. ;)

Must be if I'm only 45 points behind Colin and 2nd in the Briskoda team for producing this week! Or my new computer, is just really fast

Just checked the stats this morning - 1551 days until I overtake "150bhp&counting". Oh well..........

I've been away and had the service stopped on my laptop for a while, 1gig of memory and a 1.6gb page file = enough torture without adding a 100% cpu usage ;)

Am now down 1 comp at work :( so it may start to lesson the gap - just have to find another one ;) Oh n i'm ever closer to catchin ya Devon (only 3 behind now :D )

I am still plodding along, trouble is some of my CPU's have been stuck processing the same WU's for days now. One downstairs is just entering its 3rd week, and its now 78% complete.

hoping to finish a WU tomorrow :D

I came back from two weeks's holiday to find that my desktop machine had been assasinated by person or persons unknown, taking out the motherboard, and my test server had been shut down!

I've got my test server back online -just about to reinstall my desktop.

EDIT to say that I've just kicked off a WU that will take until 7th October! Shame really, as I'm getting a new PC before then......

Sad to say that in recent weeks my folding has declined dramatically. Mainly because I've upgraded my CAD software at work so it uses the fully potential of my PC for most of the working day. This is also the case for 2 of my colleagues whos PC's have been contributing towards the cause in my name ;)

However, In an affort to climb back up the places I'm going to leave my machine on overnight ;) Watch out - here I come.

I've just joined, so that might help a bit!

Sorry but.......WHAT THE HELL IS FOLDING?

My poor little athlon 64 is still plodding along.:D .....just overtaken Xav ....look out Wardy

Still folding away, although struggling to catch 3rd place :( Need to acquire some more kit ;)

Chris

I've lost some processing power, down to just a 24/7 2 cpus with an occasional 3rd n 4th, puttin in units every now n then. Thats why Gooch has caught me up, last time i looked - will have to pull my finger out n get some more added elsewhere (just so damn busy now students are back at uni)

I had a lapse, but got the laptop back on the case - although my Netgear DG834G is playing up a bit and wireless is a little touchy - on & off at the moment. :(

Anyone know what happens if a WU finishes and no internet connection exists to allow it to send and get another one?

I haven't had Internet access at home for a week' date=' because of a ****-up at my ISP - so my folding efforts have stalled.

p.s. Simon - see [url']http://www.briskoda.net/cms/BRISKODA_Community/Site_-_Community/BRISKODA_Folding/[/url] for a description of folding, and how to join the Briskoda team.

O.K I'm with you now. Does it need to run from a dedicated pc or can you run it from your home pc without slowing everything down?

It will run when the PC is idle. So it shouldnt slow you down at all.

You can run it from pretty much anywhere, and it won't slow the PC down - It just utilises the spare CPU power. (so you might fnd the cooling fan still whirs even when its not being used for any programs and stuff)

It doesn't slow down either of my two PCs as it simply slows down itself to allow full speed for other programs (its cool to look in task manager and see the %%s as other programs kick in - the folding goes from 99% to 90% in time as others go from 1% to 10% for example)

Its good if you have a few PCs with good processors and memory ;) Oh, and tick the "large WU" option as they score well with quick PCs.

Thanks chaps. I'll sign up when I get out of this hell-hole (office)

In my experience it just keeps retrying to send the WU to the server. Once the connection exists again, it is sent and then a new one downloaded :D

 Thanks Chris - I was worried it would lose the data and try to start afresh!

Sadly, since upgrading our work PC's to SolidWorks from AutoCAD (design software) We're now pushing the limits of our PC's.

Despite setting folding priority to the lowest option it is giving us grief and slowing down the machines.

Because of this myself and my colleagues have decide to hang up our folding hats :thumbdwn:

We can keep 2 admin machines running but the 4 decent ones will have to stop.

well my poor little P4 1.6 is still folding away.... slowly! But I've noticed a few other people have been flagging lately?

Strange its affecting the machines so badly. For a time I was running the service on a number of servers without issue, and its installed on my MediaCenter 2005 pc at home, and it doesnt affect the cpu intensive job of live tv at all.

The point it all slows down is when the PC has been idel/folding then you try to resume work. Takes ages to get things going in the right direction again.
