replacement for the octy

Featured Replies

Well my car change habit has kicked in again almost had this one for a full year :notme:  but the time has come to move on. As this is by far the best owners forum I've used (theres been a few) I thought I'd get some opinions for a suitable replacement. Here's my spec's

The budget is £3000-£5000.

No French cars period.

Age not an issue.

Petrol or diesel not fussed.

No saloons hatch or estates only.

Got to be fairly easy to mod none of my cars stay standard for long.

Mileage doesn't scare me, sooner have a well looked after high mileage car than one thats pootled around town all it's life.

Well I've give you some fairly wide scope there so bring on the suggestions. :peek:

  • THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR A SKODA OCTAVIA

  • Here you go. Manuals are pretty rare but early autos have G'box issues. It's a 3.0i petrol sport, avoided diesel as turbos and swirl flaps in the manifold are known faults. The car will do mostly

  • Mk1 octy 4x4, spend the change on tuning the hell outta it lol

The thought has crossed my mind for a 4x4 estate but need a change.

Audi b5 s4, get a good one for that, and it's got 100% more turbos than the vrs.

In the price range I'm looking at there isn't many but I did find a nice yellow estate on autotrader but it's miles away.

Locally I've found 2 civic 2.2cdti ones a ex model and the other a sport. With my honda back ground I quite fancy one. Plus I've found a steinbauer plug in tuning box in my garage, I took it off a 2.2 a few years ago when I worked for Honda. Gives 180bhp and 351nm torque stage 1 done lol.

Mondeo ST220, limited tuning potential (not without deep pockets anyway), but you won't have to spend anything on Suspension mods.

R32 Golf, as above

Looked at a few ST Mondeo and do quite like them but the road tax on the newer V6 is frightening. R32 is a no go, to small boot. The Civic I looked at today was a dog no service for the last 2 years and battered inside and out. Wife said the view out of the rear was poor made worse by the fact there's no rear wiper so that ones out to. :wall: This is gonna be a tough one, still gives me time to strip the mods off.  :notme:

A3 3.2 Quattro 5 door, better than an R32 and amore realistic boot. :D only mod it really needs though is LPG as they are a thirsty beast..

Or you could try a mk2 octy get bored real quick then buy a mk1 4x4 estate and start modding:P

I always liked the focus St. 220bhp straight out of the box and nice sounding engine. Maybe not quite as big as the Octavia but not far off. Bit heavy on fuel maybe? But I think my next car might just be a mk5 golf gttdi. Powerful enough with a remap great fuel econemy. Replacing the Octavia is tough though.

Diesel mondeo ST? 330d estate e46? Or even a 320d

It is a tough choice thinking a passat tdi pd engined one. They're good on fuel easy to tune and the estate has a great boot. Problem is there's loads about and sorting the wheat from the chaff is hard, also the look really boring[emoji33]

Petrol E46? 330i or 325i hmmmmm

Im heading to ebay

Watching a nice 330d tourer on eBay but it's a bit of a trek away

Been looking at mk5 golf estates 1.9tdi rtech can remap to 140bhp with over 200 lbft so for £280 that's stage 1 done.

Result coilovers and better wheels that's me done fot about a grand.

Ford Capri 2.8i Special in black with superlite wheels.

Those 330d bmws are very fast after a stage one map with insane tourqe figures, personal I would go for the audi b5 s4 2.7 twin turbo I had an avant in nogaro blue with the blue seats it was stage one about 320 bhp , you get the cheaper tax band pre 2001 and 30mpg when driven like a grandad !

What about a 5 series rather than a 3, they are silly cheap for a petrol and diesel 525's and 530's

  • Author

The S4s are holding there money a bit and TBF that 2.7t scares me twice as much to go wrong.

The 530d does interest me but finding a good one is hard.

Anyone got any experience with

Merc e320 ? Couple of nice ones on auto trader, massive boot so gets the thumbs up from me.

my dad went throught 2 e class mercs, twas a while back, early to mid 90's. Both were constant headaches. Didnt feel as well put together as they shudve. Put me off for life and i was only 12! 5 series diesel gets my vote. Or passat/A4. I know what u mean about the passat tho, over here, they are a noticible 'ex farmer' vehicle - a hard life drivng across fields had by many of them...

  • Author

Yeah 90s mercs suffered with rot big time. They went galvanised in 2004 so not as bad.

I do love the 5 series but all the nice ones are miles away from me. Get fed up of a 200 mile drive only to get there and it's a shed.

Passat is a good call but again some many sheds around its a mine field.

I used to have a w124 e280, loved it loads except for the fuel economy lol. When you take it to around 105 it seemed to hunker down and could comfortably cruise on cruise control at an indicated 140. Scrapped it due to losing a gear on the auto box and the wheel arches disintegrating

Been looking at E320 2004 estates some nice cars there. Road tax is a bit much though £285 a year[emoji33]
