Joys of how the Road tax system works over here.

Pre 2008, road tax was payable in bands based on engine size, after that we went carbon output route.

but to not completely screw people with older cars - those with stupid high emissions who wudve been massacred on the new rates,

any car registered pre 2008 still pays on the engine capacity rates.

1.9Tdi was around €670 last year, my previous 2003 1.2 Cordoba was €380 ish.

BUT - because the diesel is so much cheaper on fuel, i save more on fuel per yr than difference in the tax AND the extra cost on insurance.

So it actually still works out cheaper per yr than the old car :)

this is also the reason i would love love, but cant justify a VRS or even regular 1.8T....

The economics of it just make me cry a little :(

swmbo's 2012 citigo is €190 for 12months.

Well a replacement has been found ..............................bmw X5. Not exactly what I was initially looking for, but I've always wanted one and I managed to find a manual one not to far away so bit the bullet and I go pick it up this weekend.

Nice choice. Dont forget we need pictures [emoji41]

I've never seen one with a manual gearbox. They must be pretty rare!

What engine? 3.0 diesel?

Phil

Ive noticed a trend over the last number of months around -

" I need to change the Octy, what do i get? "

followed by...

" Found a replacement - Got a BMW ___"

It seems we really only have one post Octy choice :D

Manuals are pretty rare but early autos have G'box issues. It's a 3.0i petrol sport, avoided diesel as turbos and swirl flaps in the manifold are known faults. The car will do mostly town driving so the diesel would have been worse on fuel than the petrol. Add the extra cost of diesel and servicing been more expensive and petrol was a no brainier really.

Very clean looking motor there mate

Dread to think of the fuel consumption.

Dread to think of the fuel consumption.

Don't really worry about it octy never managed more than 34mpg on a run and 23mpg round town. If I can get 20 mpg round town that'll do me.

Well picked up the X5 today. Did 130 miles to £25 worth of unleaded not too bad. Mix of mway, town driving and a bit of country back roads. Drives well so let the modding begin mwaahahhh

3.0 TD6, Dread to think what the petrol would be like!

  • Author

The 5.0 supercharged do 18 mpg avg. my work disco 4 does 27.9mpg avg. the TD6 wasn't the best on fuel but is a steady beast. Great for towing but never win a traffic light drag race.

Well almost 3months to the day and think I'll be selling the X5. It's a lovely car and was great on our summer camping trips but it's so gutless wish I had got the V8. So looking at audi S6 avant with the 4.2 V8 engine, anyone got any buying tips before I head out on the hunt. Don't suggest try the audi forums as it seems they full of w+*$€&S

Cheers Chris

But the thought of 340 bhp and a V8 could easily sway me. [emoji12]

335 diesel estate bmw, tuning potential is insane lol

Nice job of cleaning it Chris. Yer I can see Audi forums being full of snobs no offence to any owners on here.

Seem so true.....

And how OP got to a X5 from the general discussion .....hmm :D

But it also seems that most folks i know move on quite quickly from a X5 as the real reason to own one never really works out.

The fact I can't think of any reason to own one of those don't really help the thread much .... :p

Going from a Octy is actually a tough choice because when you move on you realise what a great car it is.

As I don't like Mk2 Octy's when the time comes for me to move on will probably be another VAG car.

I so want a RS4 2.7 bi- turbo but they are getting more expensive by the month which is actually starting to jack up the price of the S4's as a alternative.....

Im thinking of a bmw next to be honest.. If i dont go mk2 octy

Saw a X3 the other day silver with big chunky black bumpers looked pretty darn smart

Don't underestimate the V8 X5s they are surprisingly quick and sound awesome. True many big 4x4s are driven by barbies with more money than sense, but the X5 unlike the Range Rovers are very good on road. Mine has good handling on twisty roads and gives a few hot hatches a surprise on how hard it can be pushed in the corners.

That said it's still underpowered, unfortunately the S6 Avant I looked at today was very rough and wasn't worth the 4k asking price.

The search continues may just keep the X5 and supercharge it [emoji12]
