Is this a clutch or a gearbox problem?

Featured Replies

My 1.9tdi elegance has now covered 83k. An intermittent fault is persisting and I would like to have it resolved even if it means spending some serious cash.

When cold, gear selection is no problem in all the gears. When hot ( maybe after 10 miles of heavy traffic in the city) I get a loud crash going from 1st to 2nd at around 2000rpm when I hurry the gearchange, even with the clutch fully depressed. I also notice that when this happens, say when rolling up to a give way and changing down from 2nd into 1st when the car has almost stopped, I can feel the cogs trying to mesh just as you push the lever into 1st. This is all intermittent behaviour, I can drive the car for days in the city and never get any crashing of gears then out of the blue it starts happening again.

Now is this a symptom of a worn dual mass flywheel/clutch, clutch hydraulics, or is it more likely to be synchromesh problems in the box. I would very much welcome comments from any of the Octavia experts on this forum before I take the the car in to an independent garage for investigation.

Thanks in advance.

The first thing I would do it drop the gearbox oil and refilled with genuine VAG gearbox oil. Take a look around the flanges for signs of oil leaks.

Car has presumably genuine VAG gearbox oil in it, it was changed at 66k approx. by Skoda main dealer.

I think its worn synch mate. When the oil is hot its thin and so it exaggerates the problem.Change the oil and put something like Molslip or some other gear treatment in and it should help.

When dropping the oil have a look for metal swarf
