Another Dashcam piggyback thread (Roadhawk HD hard wiring kit)

Featured Replies

I've just seen a few threads in regards to using piggyback fuse holders with dashcams.

Okay,

I have been sent in the post, a new set of fuses (just in case any blow),  2 piggy back fuse holders, and an offical roadhawk HD hard wiring kit, with the black and red ends on the end of it.

Now, while technical and IT savy minded, my skills dont stretch to far to auto electronics, how would i go about putting this alltogether so that when the ignition is live the cam comes on?

Which fuse should i pull out and piggy back to?

Where do i earth and what fuse goes where?

It sounds really simple, but would like to get it right first time around.

Thanks

Rear wiper fuse and the nut above fuse box! Use 5a fuse for wire and original fuse for wiper

Take out Fuse 6 from the fuse box - rear wiper -  ( it is in my FL Yeti )

Insert the fuse removed into the slot that will be nearest the fusebox of the piggyback holder.

Insert the piggyback with the original fuse back into slot 6 - rear wiper . & test that your rear wiper works - { if it doesn't, then move the fuse in the piggy back to other slot & retest]

Insert a 5A fuse into the remaining empty slot.

Attach earth cable to one of the screws that hold the fusebox in place.

Before you feed the cable up through pillar & between windscreen & roof lining, plug in the camera to test it works along with the rear wiper ( wont do any harm to verify this will work alongside the camera & it will verify you dont have a duff piggyback.)

If they both work together ( no reason why they shouldnt ) , then power off the camera, un plug,  locate it on screen, then feed cable to it & plug back in

HEY Presto you should have a working camera.

Make sure you fit the piggy back the right way so the fuse is actually protecting what you want it too.

Im away at the moment, the nuts that hold the fusebox in, will the earth wire need a terminal? if so i'll need to buy some.

what type or size screw is it - for the screwdriver and terminal size?

Yes you will need a round terminal, about 6mm internal.

Looks like i'm all set to fit this when i return.

Could the same piggyback circuit handle a second dashcam too for the rear? Bigger fuse needed maybe? Blackvue 5000gw

Easier just to run it down to the rear wiper motor

With it being a lease i can not splice unfortunatly

Ohh :( I'm not sure if you'll get the cable to fuse box without some additional wire!

I am planning on piggybacking another camera too the rear wiper fuse, to be a little clearer, im asking would it be okay to add a second camera to the same piggyback fuse for the rear?

Something I wouldn't recommend, no.

Since the wiring for the rear wiper will be hidden behind the trim I wouldn't worry about the Lease company finding where you've spliced in to it.

if it's any help when I looked into putting a rear facing cam in my Octy hatch Bossfox said it would be a much more neater job to pick up the feed on the motor itself as you can then have the cam mounted on the rear screen and the wiring then just tucks behind the trim and stays within the tailgate which would be the same for you too?

Yeah and you aren't fiddling about with the rubber boots which could start to leak if damaged and the headlining etc! Far easier just to go straight down to the motor!

How complicated would it be to shove a switch in so that i can change between the always on 12v power socket and ignition on/off?

Easy with a DPDT toggle switch and you know what you are doing.

Im in South Leeds too and fit these to a lot of cars. PM me if you want help.
