Octavia diesel fuel leak

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have a '56 octavia classic hatchback (1u) tdi PD. The engine is the BXE, it 5 speed and has 140k miles on the clock.

I have noticed small patches of diesel (no more than drips) in my parking space (allocated parking for a flat) under the driver side just forward of the rear wheel. I have had a look under the car and there is a fair "wet" over the fuel tank and back.

I guess I have a fuel leak (grrrr), but I don't think it is the tank as the "wet" patch starts in front of the tank.

Any ideas what the cause could be? Are there any standard issues with octavias or PD diesels that I could investigate?

Annoyingly I don't have any way of getting underneath the car for a proper rummage around, so any ideas pre- going to the garage would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Anty

My guess would be the fuel cooler.

I had a similar fuel leak in my 57 OCtavia after a service....   check the filter unit, front drivers side just behind the headlight (steel can with 5[?] pipes coming out of the top).  sealing gasket can leak or the whole thing can leak.  Bad thing is that fuel can go onto the alternator & etc. drive belt and it may [will] fail after a few hundred miles, resulting in no alternator (which gives obvious sign of red battery symbol on dashboard).

Good news, you can drive a long way with no alternator ! (but good idea to remove shredded belt first !)

lift the rear seat? and take a look

My guess would be the fuel cooler.

Fuel cooler ?

was this a PD only thing?

Fuel cooler ?

was this a PD only thing?

The fuel cooler is in the return line, just forward of the fuel tank. It is under a plastic trim.

IIRC, all non-pd automatics also have a fuel cooler.
