Skoda Fabia Comfort 16 v 2002 loss of power.

Featured Replies

Hi again,

Over the last week my Skoda Fabia petrol car has been behaving rather strangely.  The engine management light is on because the EGR valve isn't functioning properly.  However, this has now started flashing at times and the engine isn't running smoothly at all and I think it's getting worse with a loss of power especially when climbing a hill.  I did have it back-fire a couple of times a few days ago as I was climbing a hill with a passenger on board.  Does anybody have any suggestions regarding what could be wrong with the car and possibly how to rectify it?  Thank you.

Sounds like you have a misfire developing, probably a failing coilpack.

Oh.....is it a big job to rectify it?

Could somebody help me regarding the part no for the coil pack for the Skoda 16v 1.4 Fabia?  Any advice on how to replace it?  Is it an easy task?

Some help would be much appreciated here guys! :-)

What's your engine code? AUB?  BBZ?

It'll be one of these depending on the code....

Changing it will be a doddle.

Probably same coil packs as on my 2003 16v (BBY engine) Fabia Comfort . I had no less than three failing coil packs in around six months. They are easy to change, sits on top of the spark plugs. First identify what cylinder it's on, either using computer software or a mechanics good ol' ear. I used an OBD2 plug! ;)

Thank you very much.  Just checked and it's an AUB engine.

For the AUB 6Y22J4 there are two possible coil packs with different part numbers.  Why should that be and which should I choose?

Incidentally, is there an easy way of checking the spark plugs?  I just ried to remove the rubber leads to the spark plugs and it's a night-mare.  I was scared of snapping something.

This is the one isn't it?  It looks identical but I can't find any part number on mine which matches the part number listed above.  Help lease.....

Yes there are two parts listed for your car but they're the same, just different quality, by the better one if you can afford it, also buy a new set of plug leads and spark plugs and just replace the whole lot, it all needs doing.

However if you're feeling the pinch start by just replacing the plugs and leads, that may well cure the problem since a set of standard plugs and leads only lasts about two/three years.

Thank you.  I did manage to take the leads off and I sprayed some wd40 on them.  I also took the coil pack off and it was an absolute nightmare to get the two bottom leads off with a lot of corrosion present.  I also sprayed this end with wd40 and re-assembled.  I went out for a drive and the flasing engine management light no longer flashed and there was no evident loss of power until I turned into our drive which is rather steep and there was a slight splutter.  Not sure if it's the same issue.  But my feeling is that something's changed......

The spark is still breaking down under load, replace everything over three years old, seriously, WD40 ain't gonna cut it!

Edit: £25 for a set of leads and £15 for plugs isn't going to break the bank surely!
