Needing a cheap car for work

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

First of all this isnt a wanted ad as im not 100% sure what i want.

Im currently driving my dads Honda civic coupe to work which is giving out about 35mpg from the petrol.I dont want to use my own car as it might get dented at work and i only get 24mpg from that.

I cannot get comfortable in the car as the seat doesnt move that far back and it makes me feel a bit hemmed in.

Im quite a large build 6 foot 1 inch.

I keep looking and thinking about a little Fabias I had 1 about 10 years ago it was a little 1.9sdi classic in silver and i thought that it was a charming little car.

Im saving up to buy a house so i want something that does as many mpg as possible.

Im steering towards an sdi again as i am not looking for a rocket ship and with a turbo there is generally less to go wrong.

I really hope i can find a car within my budget of £1500

The less the better but is the sdi the one to go for or would a 1.4tdi be better-Also whats the tax like on a post 2001 tdi?

Thanks in advance Thomas

£1500 plus insurance and other costs buys a lot of fuel even for a 24mpg Rover. About 6000 miles worth, before you'd break even just on the purchase cost.

Thanks Huskoda i appreciate what you are saying sir its just i dont want to use my car everyday and il also be putting the car on a classic insurance policy as its a rare version.

Thankyou for your input i really do appreciate it Thomas

no rover 75 will qualify for classic insurance

1.9 tdi fabia? The SDI is pretty slow, and the TDI will still give you good MPG. You can pick one up for £1500 easily, probably under a grand if you don't mind a lot of miles on the clock.

Thanks i appreciate it the tdi only puts me off because a few friends have had them in various cars-VW golf-Seat ibiza and fabia vrs and all have had turbo issues.

I like the idea of a turbo though as i remember my sdi being slow.

Thanks again Thomas

I have had 2 tdi's , one standard, one vrs - mileage is now 110k, 98k respectively and no turbo issues - I guess it's like any purchase sometimes luck prevails , or could it down to good overall maintenance.  MPG is >48 in both on steady drives.

Thanks i would rather have a tdi but as said that just put me off a little bit.

I will now broaden my search to include tdis

I appreciate you replying thanks Thomas

If you are looking for economy go for the low powered version. I have a 75Kw Octavia 1.9 Tdi and get over 60 mpg whereas my wife has a 100 Kw Tdi Fabia and only gets mid 50's from hers. Both have about 130k. on them without turbo problems, but we have kept religiously to VW 505 or 507 grade oil. Electrics, especially central locking can be a problem.

Thankyou sir I appreciate your comment. I'll have a good hunt around and hopefully find something nice to Poole around in

Personally I think you'll not have any problems finding an SDI or TDI for £1,000 or so, you just may need to fix a few niggles.

People don't tend to sell old cars that are working perfectly.

Dealers will be looking for a profit margin, so will have better stock but charge strong prices even for older Fabias if they are any good. (In my experience)

Thankyou sir i really appreciate it. Im happy to wait a few months and save a few more pennies for the right car.

I just cannot gel with my dads car and my 75 is precious to me to leave in the works car park all day(Tesco).

A fabia would also have less chance of being hit as its alot smaller in size.

Thanks again Thomas

You'd be surprised mine is a magnet to parking dents not like it's a rough car either!

Oh right i just thought with the fabia being alot smaller car people would miss it and would fit easier into a parking space.

Thanks Thomas
