Tyres 10K in

Featured Replies

Considering taking the service/tyres and maintain option. Anyone got this? I like to have good tyres and don't mind paying a few extra ££ for them. How ever, I don't want to come replacement time and get some budget/ economy brand on my vrs.

They will put like-for-like tyres on, so won't put anything better on, but shouldn't put anything worse on either.

I was originally going to go for the SMT package, but a couple of things put me off... the first being that it doesn't cover punctures, so if you get a puncture in a brand new tyre then you're going to have to pay for it yourself.  And secondly, I reckon in 3 years/30,000 miles I'll need 2 services if I'm on the variable servicing, so why should I pay for 3 fixed 10,000 mile services?

As for the maintenance, the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that either nothing will need doing (brake pads should last well > 30,000 miles, for example), or if something does need doing then it's likely to be a warranty issue that early in the car's life.

So whilst I'm a huge fan of the theory of fixed cost motoring - I don't think the Skoda SMT package would actually lead to that.

Probably not worth it then. I only do about 8k a year. So not going to get benefits, main reason was tyres, bought a golf few years ago, I went through about 3 tyres in a month, all due to punctures (extremely unlucky). If I'd have taken the tyre option at the time I would have saved a fortune.

Assuming yours only lasted 10K (miles) you're probably being driving them to hard... My  Elegance III 2.0 Tdi Break DSG Sportmaxx-RTs'   17'' with 10K (kms) Still read 4-6mm across tread on all 4 corners... according to the guys who recently rotated them  Front<->Back, if they wear the same way they did  they'll probably last up to 40K 50K (kms)... only time will tell

I've been very impressed with the Goodyear Vector 4 seasons on the Scout and continental sport contact 5s on the SLK.

Sorry to jump in on the original post - Mark I have a part worn set of vector 4 seasons from my scout sitting in Barnsley - 5-6mm on each, no repairs if you might be interested in a spare set

Dunlop Sport Maxx GTs still going strong on my Elegance with 18" Golus, fronts still over 4mm, done 24k now, rears still over 6mm. I've had over 30k out of a set of Contis on the front of my old Superb II so you lot getting less than 10k must be driving like boy racers!

Same here although only on 17" Dunlop Sport Maxx - done 21,000 miles and when serviced at just over 18k the workshop reckoned I will get another 10k out of the fronts. Much better than I thought with a heavy torquey diseasel up front.

Of course Matt you & I only have the humble Elegance, not the vRS supercar...

ive got 13k out of my conti's.  Im changing over to the Goodyear F1 A2 on Friday.

The odd thing is my front have gone in the middle and the edges are less worn.  Ive been running them at 34psi and the fuel flap suggests 33psi so is 1 psi enough to do this and over inflate them?

Michelin PS-3's are superb and have a belting rim protector to help save your alloys from kerbing. around £110 a corner fitted in 225 x 40 x 18 92Y XL

Ive just bought my lad a set of Rainsport 3's for his Focus RS in the same size ... they were only £77 a corner but will need them fitting but still excellent value.

Hi,

thanks m8.  I would but unfortunately have no space for them. I've been trying to sell the OE dunlops off the Scout for a while. If they sell I'll definitely be interested.

Cheers,

Ok Mate no worries, I'll be sticking them on a well known auction site after the summer, so if you get any joy with the Dunlops, drop me a line.

Just over 5k on my vRS TDi and this thread has me worried - I'd be mortified to change after 10k.  I'm hoping that as I spend most of my time on a motorway I'll get a few more....

I know I'm driving a Mk2 vRS estate CR, but clearly I'm not trying hard enough!

Just replaced the fronts for the second time and again got 22.5K miles out of the old set and they were  above 1.6mm and still had tread on both shoulders.

I've had the original rears moved to the front as they've done 45K miles and still have 3mm or so tread on them. Reckon it's time to wear them down and get them replaced in a few months time.

Went for new SC5's, £108 fitted each, inc everything (225/40/18/92Y)
