Power steering/electrics faults

Featured Replies

Hi

In a state of despair with power steering. Had it in a garage that I provided with the suggested replacement parts; PAS pump and steering rack. However, they still hadn't fixed the car; power steering light still on and power steering not working. Have now had to have diagnostics check with has thrown up several different codes and faults (VAG/VAS emulator test). At a loss as to what to do next. Now money has run out - I am liaising with garage as to some compromise on their 'guesswork' as they actually didn't have the diagnostics equipment as it turns out, just made assumptions. I can list the findings, ie problems in Address 01, 09, 15, 17 was fine, 19 and 46.

Prior to the latest garage debacle, the power steering was beginning to pop in and out. The only work I had done was a replacement coil spring on front passenger side. Took it back there and it had no fluid in power steering so we popped that in but this didn't help. That's when I took it to nearest garage as I could hardly manage to drive it.

Any suggestions (simple terms, please) would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly electrical fault but the the autoelectricians I have just got a good diagnostics test from said it would be anything and could take some time to find. I have been popping onto this forum and it seems there are a lot of people who know what they are talking about.

Id have started with a proper diagnostic vcds first. That would have saved you some cash. Its giving all the symptoms of a dodgy angle sensor. But again thus is just guesswork without having the car here to check sorry

Check the large blade fuses on the top of the battery for hairline cracks.

This, very good shout sir. just looking wont do though I have seen them look whole visually, undo the fixing nut and voila multi piece fuse :-)

Better yet use a proper multimeter and measure the resistance of that fuse, any resistance means it's duff.

The PAS only consists of three components and you've already replaced two of them, only the angle sensor remains and if you unplug it your steering should work all the time at reduced assistance level.

Finally, while you have the multimeter out check your battery and alternator, battery should read over 12 volts with engine off and over 14 volts with the engine running, anything under 12v and the ECU will switch off the PAS and put the light on.
