vRS TD Oil use

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I've just passed 10k miles and need to top up the oil again. This is the second time now. Is using this amount of oil normal?

On my last two BMW320Ds, I didn't have to top uo the oil once - they hardly used any between service intervals.

Before anyone asks; yes, I check the oil levels weekly. :-)

Ta.

MK2 0R 3?

MK2 0R 3?

This is the mk3 forum and his picture is of a mk3......

I've just topped mine up for the second time at 14k miles, so far from new it's used three quarters of a litre and it had it's service at 10k miles,  seems fine to me.  Anything upto 1litre per 1000km (620miles) is considered normal.

Sorry just read full header.

My mk3 TSI consumption rate 1 litre up to service at 10000 miles .

Think that is fine for TSI. However my mk2 TDI WAS SERVICE TO SERVICE NIL TOP UP.

Nearly 5k and she doesn't need any yet.

My 1.9 Tdi Golf used two litres in its first 10,000 which in fairness the dealer suggested it might, after that it settled down, rarely needing a top up between services.

Sorry, MK3.

This mornings top-up has taqken it to almost 3 litres in 10k miles.

So it's been below the minimum level on the dipstick then?

That doesn't sound good, would expect better.

Do you drive fairly hard?

Do you drive fairly hard?

Not excessively. But lots of late night motorway miles with the cruise control set at 85.

I drove a mk2 to withinan inch of its life and never haf that high a level of oil consumption.

I'd start badgering SUK for a new engine (they did a load of Fabia vRS's) because that engine you've got is a wrong-un

Only just...

Only just...

Seems a bit more than only just, if you topped it up twice and put 3 litres in it's been at least half a litre below the minimum at some point....

Interesting, when I queried what I considered fairly high oil consumption on my new Golf, the first thing the dealer asked was whether I did a lot of motorway mileage, I.e. Fairly high speeds for prolonged periods of time. He said that is when a (new) diesel would use most oil but as mentioned, he said it would settle down.

It did at approx 12k (I was late for the service), I ran her up to about 38k before I lost her through a job change and she didn't require any top ups between oil changes.

I'll take your word for it! :-)

Thanks for this - very helpful.

My late night runs are around 250 miles each way and I tend not to stop - so the information you were given would certainly apply to me.

It's my word, it fact, the difference between min and max is 1 litre and you say you've topped it up twice and put 3 litres in.  So best case scenario is you've put 1.5 litres in on each top up....... Unless the number of tops up and volume of oil you saying it's used isn't true?

Its normal that an engine will consume oil during running but how much is always an open topic.
Most engines shouldn't need topping up between service interevals. (with my previous Ford diesels, they consumed a small amount in the first 20,000km and then much less afterwards)

I would suggest 3L in 10,000miles is on the high side but probably not concidered a "bad" engine by Skoda.

(My peugeot petrol consumes 1L of oil every 3500miles which is "normal" for the garage).

I don't really think motorway driving is bad for oil consumption. I've done 9000km so far in my vRS TDI which is 99% highway driving at 120-130kph & my oil doesn't need topping up.

I think its just a bit of luck with the tolerence stack ups for the components & the engine you get.

Having said that its always worth getting the dealer to check this.

It could just be an oil hose which needs a little tightening or is perhaps the warning sign of something which could be prevented if its nipped in the bud now.

Its always best to get it logged in the service history or on your maintainance sheet for the future.

Blimey! Wrong side of the bed this morning Neily? I'll make sure I use a pipette next time. :-)

I bought a 5l bottle of oil, topped up twice and it's now less than half full (the bottle that is).

Why would I come onto a forum asking for advice on "stuff" I've made up?

I wouldn't worry about it yet as its still running in and it is still not an excessive amount.

Wait until after its service and see how it is then but you could mention it when it gets serviced.
