skoda speedo gear

Featured Replies

Hi i have a skoda felicia want to check the gearbox oil level, the gearbix speedo gear is stuck which way to turn it to get lose ?

So turn it clockwise ? And by hand ?

No other way, counter clockwise (towards the left if looking at it from the frount of the car) but also pulling it up out of the gearbox at the same time. Just by hand is ok, any tools could brake the gear, it's only made from plastic

I tried to remove it like you said but nothing its stuck

How far did you get in removing the speedo cable?

Did you remove the bolt at the side of the cable then the retaining plate?

No i didnt its so small... I also have a problem my tranny is having a hard time shifting into first

And some helpfull Instructions

1. Remove bolt #1

2 Slide retaining plate #2 out in direction of arrow

3 Pull speedo cable #3 up away from gearbox. If it still will not free try refit the retaing plate without it's bolt, and use a screwdriver as a leaver on it.

Hope this helps

Is the gear selection problem just in 1st? Or does it happen on other gears like 2nd or reverse?

1st and 2nd but not always

Thank you for yoylur instructions i removed the speedo gear the oil level is just below the gear itself is it good ?

Yes, that sounds correct, about 4mm up the gear.

On the gear selection problem, sounds like it could be a worn 1st & 2nd gear synchro unit, or synchro rings in gearbox. You will probably just have to live with it.

For a more simple solution, you could check for play in the gear change linkage. When in gear can the gearstick be moved from side to side a lot?

i never changed the oil since i owned the car a year ago but i think it was never changed... should i change it ? it has more than 130k kilometres. yes it can move from side to side, even though i CHANGED IT!! like 2 months ago..

Gearbox oil should be changed every 60,000KM. So it sounds like it is about due for changing (your decision tho). 75w - 90 Spec GL4 is the best gear oil to use, but 75w, 75w-80, 75w-85, or even SAE80 will do, but it must be specification GL 4.

its colour is still yellow judging by the gear dipstick ? i think its still good ? by what things should i judge it if its still good ?

  • Author

so 75W-90 gl4 is good for my skoda felicia 1.3l lx petrol ?

Yes that is the best oil to use. And the oil turns black when it gets old.

  • Author

Oh so i dont have to change mine because its yellow and thin ?

  • Author

does the felicia 1.3l have a gearbox oil filter ?

Work out how much it will cost you and see if you think it is worth doing. Cost me around £17 for oil + 2 hours of my time. Have a look at the link in my first post and see what you think.

And, no there is no filter, but gearbox sump plug is magnetic.

i think ill leave it for now its still yellow in colour... btw the gear thing came better i adjusted the clutch to be exactly with the brake pedal and the gears are now shifting more easily not very easily but better.. it think its a dragging clutch in someway..

the most common cause for hard shifting the gears is too much play in gear shifting lever mechanism.

I've seen some even bent from rocks.

not solving the cause will cause major damage inside gearbox.

  • Author

Guys can you tell me how do i adjust the clutch properly to disengage properly ?

  • 5 months later...

When removing the speedo cable, do you have to undo the knurled ring on it? I cannot seem to undo it and from what I've read it's not always necessary to do so?

If you just need to check oil level or take out instrument cluster, no.

If you need to change speedo cable or speedo drive, yes.
