How to tell a genuine M badged BMW

Featured Replies

Spotted a few M badged bmw's recently, but they only had the boot badge and the alloys but a single exhaust. Do genuine M BMW's have double/quad exhausts and the grilles on the front wings etc?

Basically, was what I've seen fakes?

Yes, as far as I know

Good way of testing! Drop the Fabia 1.2 into 3rd and if it keeps up it could be an M Sport ;)

Real M cars never have a single exhaust. Mostly likely you have been seeing "m-sport" spec cars which the owners may have added an M badge onto in a lame attempt to make it appear like an M car.... :-)

Yeah. You can get m-sport spec cars. These have the big wheels, body kit etc etc but a normal engine.

You can usually spot an M car by the exhausts and sound IMO.

Nothing like a 116i m sport. *s******

Yeah, same as s-line Audis.

Sports seats, firmer suspension slightly lower

and sometimes a spoiler.

New msports now come with the M badges on the front wings

And thats the only place from the factory on the exterior of any of the M sports as far as I know.

When we say 'msport' are we on about the ones with the small engine? (I get confused with the terminology haha)

I saw a bmw 118 with an m badge on the boot lid the other day. Was nice. Just not a 135, which is always a shame.

I always thought that a car which was branded " M Sport " had the " M " styling and Interior  but not the " M " engine.

The proper "M's " had both

Unfortunately the M badge is becoming like the AMG badge.

A styling pack on a standard car to give the owners a snazzy car to show off with sensible running costs.

As such, it's losing it's special appeal IMO.

That's about it. An M badge on the the steering wheel, gear knob and door strips and a poor relation engine.

drw8,

Just a bit opposite to your post,

& a Q Car.

look out for the Silver M5 going past Portlethen & down to the Bridge of Dee Early some Mornings, or in the area at other times.

It has a Single Side Rear Twin Tailpipe, Personal Plate & Debadged.

It is actually a M5, a sleeper that looks like it is a Diesel Series 5 on wide wheels/tyres.

I Debadged it & fitted the Rear Valance,

the Original owner that had it liked speed and comfort but is not into being challenged to races by Corsa VXR's and the Likes..

(Or Cars with VXR, vRS, GTI, STI etc badges and the likes when they are not.)

I remember when the SRI badge on a Vauxhall meant something, not it seems to be on some of the slowest cars ever created! I hate it when people stick badges on cars to make them look like something they're not.

Look at the driver, if they look to be a jumped up business boy or girl with a smug look on their face and too much self importance; chances are it's a company provided M-Sport.

A friend had a 318d estate loan car while his was in under warranty.

It came with the sport pack and 4 pot brakes, and had m badges on it. With a whopping 143bhp. Wow.

Really annoys me personally! They should live on m cars only. Factory or not.

(Says a debagded 330d sport owner)

Real M cars look like this...

The bonnet, vented wings and rear end should be giveaways to a true M.

They do come with less bulge and holes.

Easy on an m3 yeah

But a 135 is a little tougher.

My mate had a z4M and that looked normal apart from the exhausts

You can get a 318i msport or 335i msport

Msport is just trim / bumpers / stiffer suspension

The engine in a 335i SE and a 335i msport is exactly the same.

M cars are completely different beasts to msport.

Im not going to lie though an msport car is a cracking looking thing. Not everyone needs to live their life at 100mph

My brother just had a brand new 320d msport as a courtesy car.

It was lovely. Looked awesome and was rather punchy. The new 320d is 184bhp and comes with an 8speed auto box. Very capable car. Made my old 320d feel like a slug in comparison

Fair shout. Im learning here haha.

The z4m isnt easy to spot though.

Same engine as the m3

My boss has one

Twin pipes, different wheels and its wider i think.

It does go well :)

I have a 116d M sport, the "M" refers to trim level, sport seats, big alloys and M's stuck on things like steering wheels and gear stick but having driven an M5 I can assure you the M badges on my 1 are added weight nothing more

The 116d M Sport is a hilarious oxymoron.
