Buying an 09 octavia vrs petrol. facelift

Featured Replies

Hi there I joined this forum as I am going to buy a Octavia on Friday coming and since I joined this site all I can see is threads about timing chains. just

wondering what I am letting myself in for.

the car has 47k on it and is from a skoda dealer with a 1 year skoda warranty. obviously under the consumer rights if something major goes in 6 months they

will have to fix it but what happens thereafter im not so sure.

any advice on what to look for would be great. I have already been told to look out for rear tyre wear and service history. but what about the engine. noises ect.

I read somewhere the injectors are noisy in most? or should there be any noise from the chain?

any help would be great

thankyou

The 1.8TSI engine which my car has is one of the smoothest and quietest I have driven. If you are concerned about timing chain tensioner failure, ask the dealer to replace that along with the timing chain and see what the reaction is. And if you pay for the cost of the parts and the dealer provides the labour FOC, you will get a 2 year/unlimited warranty on the replacement parts.

I love my vRS, best car I've owned. However, I assume you've seen my recent thread. It appears my chain tensioner has failed and probably killed my engine in the process. I don't think it's a common problem but certainly an issue that affects the tsi engines across the VAG range.

Mine was properly looked after and serviced correctly, it's just luck of the draw I guess. You can change the tensioner for the revised part, however, I'm now considering getting mine repaired and swapping to something else.

I don't like the idea of driving a car that could dump its load at any moment.

as far as i can tell there are 1000s of cars with these engines most haven't broken you always find a noisy minority  on forums :)

That was always my outlook.......until today!!

Check the rear door rubbers ar'nt rubbing away the paint on the inside of the rear arches. Also have a look under the front and rear doors the water gets trapped and starts to rust. Also there is a common rattle from the far left of the dash behind the glove box that's easy to fix.

Check of delamination at the bottom of the windscreen and also for rear wiper issues. You might also want to get it scanned by VCDS from a local member.

It has a 1 year Skoda warranty so if it breaks they will fix it I was the same as you my broke and they fixed it on the warranty the only thing i would like to have more of a racer sound when you put your foot down but that's me

im in a slightly different boat tho. I live in NI and im buying in Croydon skoda. but I did phone skoda UK customer services and they said my local dealer in Belfast would have to carry out any warranty work if they wanted to or not. I suppose skoda uk would just give my local dealer the cost of the work.

I don't mind replacing the parts after or just before the 1 year ends along with a chain, im just a bit concerned about if they would actually fix it in the 2nd 6 months of the warranty

the last thing I want to do is replace it myself while under warranty or it would be seen as my fault if it broke. lol

I have asked the dealer if the warranty will cover this part and he said he will ask the service manager on Monday. even if I wanted too they would not have the work done by Friday. and I have booked my flights ect. to get the car

Yes I know what you mean I very nearly bought a r32 golf 2 weeks ago, soundtrack was great, tourque was great, very comfy. then I wound my neck in. 500 a year tax, 20mpg, small boot,

lol. I need a car to go camping in hence the vrs estate. my dad has a vrs octavia diesel 2011 hatch and its boot is also huge.

Sorry to hijack - what is the fix for this please?

Thanks :)

interesting the dealer asked the service department about the tensioner and they said the engine is under warranty but the chain tensioner is not, lol.  but surely under consumer rights and

fair trading and all that good stuff they have to stand over it for 6 months at least?

So the Skoda used car warranty specifically does not cover tensioner failure? I think Skoda UK would be interested to hear that! Perhaps the dealer means that if you have the tensioner changed for the latest version, then the new tensioner is not covered by that warranty. But that is totally contrary to the replacement parts warranty conditions below:

Replacement Parts Warranty.

All Škoda original replacement parts carry a warranty for a period of two-years/unlimited mileage from the date of purchase. Items with warranties in excess of two years will be advised to you at the time of purchase. The two-year warranty does not apply to parts fitted under the terms of the vehicle warranty, which are warranted for the remaining period of the vehicle warranty.

So the warranty specifically does not cover tensioner failure? That is utter tosh.

yea that's what I thought. I take it by law my car must be warranted by a main skoda dealer for at least 6 months by law?

Does that mean that if your tensioner broke, they would replace the stuffed engine & you would just buy the new tensioner?

I would be happy with that :D

I spoke to skoda used car warranty About a month or 2 ago ad I too wanted to know if tensioner failure was covered and I was reassured that it was.

The tensioners are non serviceable parts and should last the life of the engine. So if it fails then I expect the warranty company to put up the bill.

ŠKODA APPROVED used cars - The advantages of buying from us

Understandably, a lot of people are a little nervy when buying a used car. To take the uncertainty out of buying a used ŠKODA, go to one of our APPROVED retailers. We offer a whole host of checks, warranties and the like, so you don’t have to worry about anything but choosing the right car for you.

Our APPROVED used vehicle programme includes the following:

Manufacturer and/or ŠKODA APPROVED warranty

If you’re buying a car that’s less than six years of age with less than 72,000 miles on the clock you’ll automatically receive a 12 month warranty. Older cars which have a maximum of 100,000 miles on the clock come with a minimum of 3 months’ warranty. Warranties will either be the remainder of Manufacturer's warranty, a ŠKODA APPROVED warranty or a combination of the two.

You can also extend the warranty period at the time of buying, giving you even more worry-free driving time.

A year’s free Manufacturer and/or ŠKODA APPROVED Assistance

Again, if your car has yet to reach its sixth birthday and has covered less than 72,000 miles, you’ll benefit from 12 months’ Manufacturer and/or ŠKODA APPROVED Assistance. If your car breaks down, one phone call will get you back on the move. Cover operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Terms and conditions apply. Please speak to your local ŠKODA retailer for full details.

Just so you know your used ŠKODA is in good shape, our fully qualified technicians will give it a comprehensive workshop check before it’s delivered to you.

Vehicle status checks

We arrange for a third party to investigate your vehicle’s history and mileage, to make sure you don’t get any nasty surprises – like discovering there are outstanding finance payments owed on it or it’s been stolen or written off previously.

30 day/1,000 mile exchange

This demonstrates your retailer’s confidence in the vehicles that are on offer. (Terms & conditions apply).
