If your doing a simple bleed no, just use the good old method of pushing the pedal up and down while someone els is opening and closing the bleed nipple. Take care not to push the pedal all the way to the floor.

If the fluid has been completely drained you can trigger the abs pump with diagnostic equipment.

Much easier to use a pressure bleeder than risk killing the brake master cylinder by using the pedal pushing method. Using the latter if you go to far with the pedal you permanently damage the seals in the cylinder. The VAG approved method is pressure bleed and not pedal pushing.

Of course if you own the above do that, works a treat and can easily be done with one person.

Pressure bleeder can be as easy as buying a Gunsons Easy Bleeder roughly £20 from Halfords/Screwfix/ and lots of small motor factors. It will last you quite a few years until you can't stop it leaking, then its time for your second one!
