I used to have to use them for my 3rd party warranty.

Totally hopeless. On one occasion they left a connector disconnected meaning no turbo boost, another they left a pry bar rattling about on the top of the engine bay.

Strangely the warranty company now claims they don't used them anymore.

Doesn't seem as cheap as Mr Clutch!

I'd make an effort to find a good independent  if I was you.

What area are you in?

I don't take hints well

to the OP,

I can recommend Crichton Donaldson in Perth but he's still a fair old trek from you.

I find halfords are good for "emergency issues". That is all.

Dire emergencies I'd add, happening on Sundays only when nothing else is available ;)

nail on head my friend!

I presume the old oil is sucked out through the dip stick hole? But perhaps even dealers do it like that theses days?

I'll pass on that.

The only proper way to drop the oil is to take the engine to operating temps (oil at or as close as to 90C) park it on a flat (my drive is inlcined so lift the front up-easier to access as well) wait a bit (I wait around 20 mins) and undo sump plug to let the oil out into a suitable receptacle later to be taken to a recycling centre. Gives me more comfort knowing all the crap from the bottom of the sump is out :).

Where's that Halfords with lots of very eager young female sales assistants doing car things again?

Nope not even the dealers suck through drain holes! Unless it's a smart for two which has no sump plug!

There seems to be a bit of confusion here between Halfords Servicing Centres and Halfords the shop that sell car and bicycle parts.  I can't see an oil change being a problem for the service centre, they can look up all the oil specs, capacities and tightening torques on their Autodata system.  On the other hand if you roll up to one of their shops and expect to get an oil change done in the car park by the bloke who fits the wiper blades, bulbs and stereos, you're asking for trouble.

I like my local Halfords, lots of very nice looking helpful young ladies, I hear they do car things as well!

I'd still rather deal with a munter who actually has some interest in what they are selling.

I went into Screwfix yesterday for some Zinsser B.I.N. shellac, which is what I asked for.

I might as well have asked for a unicorn. She said 'I've never heard of it...' She was fit but dense as fook.

I said 'That's not to say you don't stock it though, it just means you are disinterested in your job'

She took some offence at my factual statement until she looked it up and saw they DO keep it

in stock. I bloody hate using the high street, it is largely staffed by morons and underachievers.

Wow, that's a tad harsh... she might have just started or whatever. In any case, the last time I used Screfix the system they operated worked on a basis on either picking up what you ordered on line from your nearest shop or turning up, looking up what you wanted, writing down the catalogue no and then going to the counter to check if they had it in back? I'd have never expected a counter staff to know every item of their tens of thousands of stock entreis lol.

Make sure they use the right sort of oil for that price. It DOES make a difference

Best if you can use an establishment that does not employ those that have been Quick Flick Dancers etc.

Clean that filter with a cloth and apply a dirty finger mark to show the work has been done and a new filter fitted.

No need for a new Sump Plug or Crush washer only a few ever have a drip.

Obviously in this day and age that never happens at Service Centres or Dealership Worshops.

Thats Old Skool not Kool.

Funnily though, there are staff that do seem to spend lots of time TXTing,  sometimes even TXTing each other. when they are just a few yards apart.

Amazing how they get so much work done while that is going on.

I used Halfords for my MOT test this year and they did a top job.

In what way can a MOT Examiner do a poor job?

lol, bit of an oxymoron going on there Gary.... a fit munter.... the big question is...would you?...

my bad,  reread it,. a fit bint...

Nope I wouldn't...

I'm used to a much finer grade of woman.

My point was lost somewhere, but if the girl from screwfix spent less time doing her

make up and more time reading the product catalogue of the PLACE WHERE SHE WORKS

then she would be better at her job. I have spent years working trade counters in my past

and if you are interested enough to learn what you keep in your stores then you might just have

an easier time serving the people who want to buy/requisition them. I rarely had to look up product

codes when I did that type of job for over 10 years.

She would be better off in a clothes shop or nail bar or hairdressers where she can wax lyrical

about stuff she actually knows something about rather than waste my time when I need a specific

product from a trade counter.

Are you sure about that.

I cant comment on the Skoda dealer around here but a lot of others are doing it.
