1.8T high fuel usage

Featured Replies

I picked up a 2004 Octavia Estate on Friday with 8000 miles, and it's great, turbo kicks in nicely and it feels quicker than my old 1999 Audi A3 1.8T, but the fuel usage seems very fast at the moment.

I need to fill it up and do some more driving to be sure, but I think I've only done about 150 miles over the weekend and the tank is now only 1/2 full.

I used to get 100 miles per 1/4 tank in my A3, which had exactly the same engine, only with 70k miles more on it!

If usage remains high like this then I'll have to get the dealer to look at it; my guess would be lampda sensors in the exhaust?

Cheers,

B

Sounds similar to my findings that the old cable throttle 1.8T's are much better on fuel than the new ones. I think around 300miles from a tank is about right on the newer DBW 1.8T's.

Are you serious? This usage can't be anything like the 35mpg that they're meant to achieve. I admit I don't expect to quite get that, but 300 miles on 55 litres must be about 25mpg, and that's bloody awful.

Pre-remap I regularly got 425-450 miles to a tank...getting around about 350-380 now.....obviously that's not ragging it everywhere but there is some spirited driving.

I do use the expansion tank trick though which means I tened to get 100 miles before the indicator leaves the first mark.

I get 300 per tank full - fully remapped, CAI, turbo back zorst and hiflo cat and boost turned up most of the time :D

Well I don't think it's remapped, although it does feel quick...

I'll fill it with some BP fuel and see how the week goes. It may be that the dealer didn't fill it completely, just until the needle was showing "full", and that I'm missing 50 to 100 miles. I do hope so, but I was shocked at how fast it dropped, especially when doing fast A roads and motorway driving at moderate speeds.

I should also point out that this is not a vRS, just the 150bhp engine.

I'm currently heading for my third 400+ mile tank. This involves very careful driving though !

What does the trip computer say your MPG (trip 2) is ?

  • Author

Comp says my average mpg is 35. I know these figures to be optimistic though (my A3 always over-estimated, saying more like 36 or 37 when I was getting 34 or so).

Like I say, I need to fill up, reset all trip figures and start from scratch.

hum, my VRS gets around 35mpg, but im getting about 400 miles on a tank... thats not driving like a numpty thou :)

These day i get about 250 - 300 out of a tank, however I am now only using my car for short trips, normally only 8miles a day {4 to and from work} or to the shops at tlunch time etc, as we tend to use the wifes 4x4 of a night or at weekends.

Goochie, 400 miles out of the tank??? Is the tank the size of a water tank or something because that's alot of mileage out of a car with that kind of engine.

BK1, the 150bhp 1.8T is pretty much de-tuned vRS engine if I remember correctly. I know someone who remapped his 1.8T 150bhp unit, and got it a little past 180bhp.

But those of you getting 300 from a tank are all driving a vRS aren't you?

I just filled up with BP Ultimate and reset everything so I'll see how things look at the end of the week... if the fuel lasts that long.

I only drive 28 miles a day, and 3/4 of a tank normally gives me just over 300 miles in the A3, but now things look really poor.

I'll be having words with the salesman if it stays this bad.

As I say, my A3 had the same engine as this, and all the published figures for mpg, fuel tank size and emissions are the same between the 1.8T A3 and this 1.8T octavia, so why is this Skoda drinking so much..

Top up the fuel tank, note the mileage reading, run the car until the tank is nearly empty, top it up again and note the mileage. Only when you have done that will you have some meaningful information on which to assess fuel consumption.

PS: My Jabba'd 4X4 has averaged 31.69mpg overall, giving a theoretical range of 429 miles for a tankful (63 litres) of petrol.

In my (currently) standard Octy vRS I can usually get around 300-350 miles per tank (~31 / 32 mpg) depending on the driving conditions and whether or not I am wearing my lead filled boots ;) .

As for the published mpg figures, take these with a pinch of salt since the drive cycle used does not relate particularly well to many everyday driving conditions.

I have no experience of the non DBW 1.8T but I can say that I am happy with 30+ mpg for the performance on offer. If you are really concerned with mpg then buy a diesel ;) :P <-- note sarcastic comment (as there seems to be general lack of humour these days ;) )

Got 44mpg last saturday but it waaas soooo boorriinngg Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

44mpg - How  Even driving like a geriatric vicar I can only get 39 - 40 mpg

I get 380 - 420 miles per tank, that's with SWMBO using it mostly for commuting and my occasional more enthusiastic run. I get more than 300 miles on a tank full even when towing the caravan!

Believe me when I say don't even try......I nearly lost the will to live a couple of times ...nearly all M4 M5 A30 to Cornwall and with one eye on the road the other on the mpg gauge all the way down .....I don't believe I actually got down 50 mph on the M5 at one point :osorry to who ever I held up

I get around 30-31 mpg out of my re-mapped vRS, although I have had 40 pre remap on a particularly docile cruise along the M4 from Bristol. Mind you I got 23 today coming back from work (18 miles) cos I got a bit annoyed at numpties hogging the outside lane :)

Helium filled soles then Rob :D:rofl:

Mil.

It is the result of careful driving, thinking ahead, lifting off rather than braking etc.

You're right that the 150bhp 1.8T can get big BHP figures - 220bhp can be seen easily.... as I have done with my car.

Approaching 1/2 tank and only done 120 miles. This sucks.

Hmmmm what model Goochie, as mine is currently in 150Bhp mode (hence my name). Mines the L&K, hoping to have custom code 2 once i get all my other plans sorted

I have just got back from Fleetwood, after a trip yesterday to Stafford and wakefield on wednesday, filled the car up on the way to fleetwood at Preston, set off and got to near fleetwood, could not believe my eyes, the trip computer was showing this............was showing 39.4MPG, and 37.5 overall on trip2, have been almost constantly at a fixed 70mph! so a VRS can be economical! :D

Yep, I agree with you. With my vRS you could drive 60 miles and the gauge wouldnt even move from Full.

Sounds like something is causing the car to run a little rich. Could be MAF, Temp sensor or some other sensor.
