What brakes?

Featured Replies

Hi all

Thanks for looking I'm after some help on brakes I've googled an goolged an I'm still none the wiser. I am currently using red stuff pads on Delphi disks they have only been on about 6 months an have already warped my disks.

What I'm trying to work out is, it my disks or pads that are a problem? If I'm on the motorway an i brake at about 100mph it scares the crap out of me because it feels like I have no brakes. I dunno if it is my disks or pads I know Delphi are an ok brand but nothing special but what are peoples reveiws on EBC redstuff pads I'm getting brake fade?

Because these are all still like new I'm not to keen on wanting to go out an buy all new just yet I have seen brembo disks and pads are quite cheap but I also know cheap is no good so does anybody have any experience with the brembo disks and pads?

Or has any good advice on pads I know the ds2500 are the best but out of my price range ATM am I doing something wrong with the redstuff pads?

Thanks guys

Well Brembo have been around for years and usually good quality,

Delphi are a cheap brand and I would suspect that is your problem..

Mintex are a good all rounder and have been around for years.

You say you are getting brake fade have you changed the fluid?

I have Delphi discs and they are pretty good....except rust

Yeah have to agree with the rust mine look a few years old an there only 6 months or so,

Think ill order the brembos up guess I won't know till I try.

I have uprated my fluid to halfords 5.1 I think it is I know it's not the best around but it was better then there standard

It may be worth going to green stuff pads as the reds may be too hard.

Either way I think I'm in need of new discs so I'm goin to order the brembos an use the discs an pads if the pads are pooh I'll put the redstuff back in an see how I get on with the brembo discs. Brembo are such a big name in brakes I can't see them being pooh but the price of them just seems to good to be true!!!

On eBay u can get grooved brembo discs and brembo pads front an rear for under £200 just seems to good for such a good name in brakes??

Thanks again

Green stuff are good pads but they throw out more brake dust than other pads i have used.

A harsh judder at speed when braking is usually indicative of warped discs. This is normally caused by overheating the disk or by giving it a very sudden temperature change, for instance, doing a lot of braking then hitting a big puddle.

I would swap the discs. Go with the fronts first, as they do most of the braking and therefore will have the most effect judder wise.

If you're running up-rated pads, then its a good idea to run up-rated discs. However, anything with grooves or holes in can give a bit of feeback when braking, so take that into account.

Thanks for the info but what do you mean by feedback?? I have a bad judder when I brake so I think I'm in need of new discs was just wondering if the discs are pants or the pads shall I keep the red stuff or try a new pad?

Thanks

Brembo doesn;t make brake discs, they are rebranded, and usualy from Delphi

Don't use Green Stuff, they're just plain dangerous imo.

I use Tarox corsa .114 pads, not cheap but they work very well from cold and once you get a bit of heat in them, they're awesome. I use them with standard, plain discs from Euro Car Parts and I've never ever had brake fade with them. I've tried all the grooved and drilled jobbies and found they just make a lot of noise and wear the pads out quicker.

Can I ask if your vrs is standard or have you had a remap?

Thanks

nor do thery make pads - these are rebranded mintex pads

It's remapped, The dyno graph I got with the car reckons it's running 230bhp but with the bolt on bits it's got it's more likely 210 - 215. My old Octavia was running 226bhp and I used the Tarox pads with plain discs on that and never had any problems. My little Rover 200, which I use to compete in motorsport events, has a MGZR 160 engine in and I use the same brake set up on also with no problems. Every time I hit that middle pedal, it stops very quickly :D

I've bought the pads from various places over the years, cheapest I just found after a brief google session is here:

http://www.motamec.com/car-parts/brakes/brake-pads/shopby/skoda-smart-ap-geo.html?limit=15&mode=list (Scroll down the page a little bit.)

As for discs, I just use these Eischer ones from Euro carparts:

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Skoda_Octavia_1.8_2004/p/car-parts/brakes/brake-friction/brake-disc/?104440851&1&6e12e3df5b41cccc056a273b04fc2d792b9a8988&000027

Where I live Brembo pads and rotors are not that expensive, but is not worthing just because of the name

For good price quality I;ll choose Zimmerman rotors and Pagid or Ferreodo Premier pads

Them discs are only cheap so do you not find they warp or u get any brake shudder? My front discs cost £100 an they are crap they are delphi a an I got them from S c motor factors was this just a bad choice on my part??

Thanks

Pagid disks are £67 from euro car parts for the pair.

I use them on the track and not warped them.

What pads do u use with them discs mate?

I use pagid discs and pagid pads on the rear but ferodo ds2500 on the fronts.

By feedback i meant a bit of vibration, as if you have grooves/dimples/holes then the surface of the disc won't be perfectly smooth.

I would say swap out the discs and pads for a decent named brand that doesn't cost the earth and see what happens.
