New Supercharged Turbo Golf

Featured Replies

Nice..

Wonder how long it will take someone to gear the supercharger up and uprate the turbo pressure to see what power could be had.

Some interesting comments at the bottom of that article regarding reliability and longevity of the engine.

It says in the article that this is to compete with the super frugal wave of diesels? Surely you would just buy a TDI rather than go for a complex combined superchaged/turbo small/medium size engined petrol car? Quoted torque is 177lb-ft which is already less than a standard Fabia VRS and probably wouldnt be much better after a remap. And 39mpg is nothing to shout about compaired to most TDI's either. Probably the biggest downside will be the price being a VW so I'm guessing around 15k upwards for a base model. For that kind of money there are several better options from the VAG group range.

VW are simply tapping in to the fact that some people just don't want to drive a diesel' date=' [TongueInCheek'] and that there are people who won't accept that the Fabia vRS is, as we all well know, the best and fastest car ever built ;) [/TongueInCheek]

But it's a petrol so revs higher and makes 37bhp more than the Fabia vRS. Also being a 1.4 petrol it'll be lighter than an equivalent diesel.

39mpg isn't bad, especially considering petrol is cheaper than diesel.

Not keen on small engines having a lot of power wrung out of them.Sure it is fine but makes me a bit nervy.

Probably be priced at an amazingly cheap

I like the idea of that. Picking up where the Renault 5 died, as did the Fiesta RS turbo, Charade GTTi etc. The idea of a small engined forced induction car will hopefully work out well on the lardy golf - creating [dare i say] a drivers car

Fair play to the mk5's though, they are meant to be a lot better than the 4 >??

Hopefully the engine will appear in smaller cars like the polo or even lupo, then we have a new G40.

True not everybody wants a diesel, I only used the Fabia as an example  I suppose the Seat Leon FR would be a better comparison in terms of size etc.

Yep I agree. Imagine the motor in a Fabia vRS. Chipped and pulleyed and away ya go :)

Fair points, I was just going on the basis of the article saying that it was to compete with diesels.

Which it will in my opinion as the running costs will be very similar but it'll likely have better performance.
