These Honda Civic Type 'R's - they're not that quick are they?!

Featured Replies

Civics are about 200bhp. They corner well but straight line is there weakness. Only way to get big power from these is a turbo/supercharger.

That is all.

197BHP for the EP3 and 198BHP for the last FN2, I suspect somewhere on the internet there's a thread on a Honda forum about a ____ in a old Octavia with "ICE" racing a Type-R.....  Both as bad as each other, hopefully when they wrap themselves round a tree no one else will be involved.

Not another type-R vs VRS thread

Civic is alot quicker to 60 than the octy although i think theres only 1mph difference at top speed in favour of the civic. Problem is alot of the CTR's arent looked after very well, they use oil and most owners dont even know about it. I guess a remapped octy with its extra 200ish KG could keep up. Never tried myself... Yet ;)

Really is there a need to say that.......

Well I do hope no one else will be involved...... Do you feel otherwise?...... Bit sick that....

I think bowders means did you really need to say "when they wrap them selfs round a tree"

Well that's what happens to street racers, I'm not complaining though, the gene pool benefits from a bit of cleansing every now and then.

Im not sure you could call the OP a street racer because he and another motorist thought they would have a 10 second blast down a slip road. I think most of this forum is guilty of having abit of fun with a fellow driver from time to time..

Absolutely spot on!

I was about to say something similar :)

Exactly. But admit that here and you get lynched.

Briskoda: A Skoda driven briskly....  :wonder:

As Martyn highlighted, the site is called briskoda for that reason. Enthusiasts diving their skodas briskly.

It's great to hear the op is still enjoying his car :)

Correct....

Get off your high horse....

The op was on a straight road and was not seeing red mist like a teenager on heat. This is what we all do once on a blue moon with our cars if we are honest in a low risk brisky drive. So lighten up.

Anyway, getting back to the original topic, you are right about these cars. They just do everything so well. Travel in comfort, spirited drving or tip runs! So much space. The type r is uncomfortable in comparison. I'll not mention speed in case I get told off too but I once gave a cooper s a nasty shock indeed! No dogs, cats, octavias or trees were hurt during that process!!

I suppose you have driven round all your life at the speed limit and never had a little blast yeah?? Do us a favour

My Mrs gramp has an Audi tt 225 which most of the time he drives round quite sedate.. yet if he was on a dual carriage way and the conditions were the same or similar to the op.. And a boy racer tried to have a punt, he would we see them off. And he has years of experience behind the wheel.!!

I'm gunna admit as David88 will testify. I have a blast whenever the mood takes me, but if I wanted to go slow I'd buy a 1.6!!

The wrap round the tree and gene pool comment was way over the line.

Agreed. Regardless of whether people go along with the odd blast or not I dont think there's a need for comments like that.

It seems some of my text was  removed.... borrrrringggg lol

Yeah that was me. If you'd prefer an official warning that can be arranged :D

That is all.

Johnny, you must add a suitable MEME or it doesn't count. Them's the rules I've just decided :D

Something like this

I love a good thread like this as it shows me that there are still people who admit that they like their cars and occasionally, just occasionally use them to do something other than get from A to B.  As you can see from my avatar I drive a Vectra.  It is a sensible family car with a big boot.  Just as the OP mentioned that he's impressed with the multi-layered personality of the Octavia, I too like that with my rep mobile.  It can transport all five of us in a calm, quiet manner with everything we need in the boot.  It can take all sorts of unwanted items to the local tip and has once or twice transported my mother from one place to another - she's not 81 years old but still likes a nice smooth journey.

For me to say that now and then I use some of the power that GM saw fit to bless the car with shouldn't get people annoyed really as why else would I own such a car?  The OP has a vRS.  Now and then it's good for the soul to feel something other than the beige emotions that daily life brings to our existence.  Most of us are good people, doing the right thing and being generally wholesome characters on a daily basis.  If the OP has a pop at a Type R in the conditions that he describes then fair play to the lad.

As for the two cars being head to head, me & a mate had them back in the day when they were current - the photo below is from 2006.  We had many an early morning drive over the Moors round Whitby and loved every minute of it and they were very evenly matched in some ways.  However, the Civic went round corners, the Octavia wobbled & hopped round them. They were pretty much the same in a straight line 'till the Octavia had a remap & then I had the edge.  Over undulations at NSL speeds the Octavia could get out of sync with itself & become unsettled but the Civic retained it's composure.  I preferred the Octavia as I needed to move people & things & the Civic couldn't do that as well.  Happy days.

I havnt joined in on this to start ripping type r's to shreds. I have total respect for japanese engineering having owned a brand new honda cbr 600 back in 1990. I can testify how tough they are! That poor bike really did take a LOT of abuse. And still going strong up until the day someone decided I no longer needed it and lifted it into the back of a van. But, a mate of mine has owned a type r about the same time as ive had the octavia. Hes is a 55 plate with only 65k on its clock. Mine is 51 plate with 120k. Most of the time we drive the same like as in slowly. Back & forward to work as we work at the same place and live on the same estate. We reckon hes is quite a bit worse on fuel as we know what we spend every week. Hes always complaining about how much oil it uses too. Now I do need to top the octavia a little bit more these days probably due to its age and the fact I switched to thinner oil but hes is still a lot worse than mine. We also reckon hes been through at least one more set of tyres than me. Different makes granted. He fitted bridgestones I got contis. Hes has munched those already just last week got some toyos fitted. My contis are still looking good. On 3 seperate occasions now hes has failed to start for reasons he cant get to the bottom of. He does get embarrassed having to phone his skoda owning mate for a lift to work because his honda wont start! We havnt compared on the road but I have driven his car and tbh I wasnt blown away. They do sound good though! I reckon they're evenly matched. A family car hes is not either only having 2 doors half the boot space and next to no suspension!

Im quite happy with the octavia!!
