Space saver wheel for VRS as dealer accessory

Featured Replies

That's the question I posed them earlier today.....or more precisely "can you source me anything under £200 that will function as a spare wheel for the VRS?" They've gone away to find out options for me.

I don't care if its a space saver, steelie or a Gemini anthracite rim at the moment as long as it fits in the tyre well, fits all the wheels and doesn't cost a bomb.

Skoda UK have messed this one up!

  • Update from Skoda UK. There is now an aftermarket space saver and foam insert with toolkit available for the VRS. They are finalising the parts in their system but it should be purchasble via dealers

  • its total nonsence for any new car to come without a spare wheel in my opinion

  • I picked up my official aftermarket spare wheel kit for my VRS today. Its identical to the BTO factory option (no surprises there) - wheel, toolkit and foam insert all installed perfectly. Job done. B

If you go to the post I linked to at the top click on the first persons name (whizzo) and PM them and ask what dealer they used as they gave him a price and could do it.

I did check that out - he's in near Newcastle, I'm near London. Figured it was too far to go for a spare.....but I will ask.

What a total **** up by Skoda UK Sales and Marketing Dept.

Come on Alistair Stewart- Brand Director -UK, sort the buggers out!!

They could give you the part numbers etc or at least advice on how to get your dealer to order it correctly or get your dealer to speak to theirs.

I've just got off the phone with a 2nd Skoda Customer Services person and yet again, they confirm that you cannot buy a Spare wheel as a kit or standalone for an Octavia VRS. Its BTO or nothing. They are only available for the non-VRS models.

I pointed out that if you have a BTO spare wheel and you need a replacement, what does one do then?.....and then the penny dropped.....but no solution. Useless.

So I called Citygate Skoda Watford. These guys are really helpful! After the explaining the situation, they have found the same problem. There is no after market spare wheel kit for the Octavia VRS. The part number in the photograph above cannot be ordered after market either. They are going to make some calls to find out what options are available to me including them sourcing 3rd party parts to achieve the same thing.

I can't believe its this hard - I can see me buying an Gemini anthracite rim with tyre at this rate.

Brian: Whilst I can't confirm it, it's possible what you have doesn't fit the front wheels.

The saga continues.

As said above, and I've said myself elsewhere, the 18" Gemini will fit in the wheel well on my vRS estate (which has no variable floor). However, the floor flap then sits directly onto the wheel/tyre so any jack and other kit would have to sit wholly inside the wheel without rising above the tyre level. All do-able then if that's the way you choose to go.

What a ridiculous mess though not to be able to buy the proper thinny spare as an aftermarket. Let's hope you can sort it out before your trip.

Hi all,

Just inspected the boot of the car and it's a size 16" wheel. Car is 18" not happy as surely x + y isn't going equate z.

Well I think a word with citygate is needed

Just check it's 5x112PCD

Thanks for this, you're a star. I've asked the seller the question.

Why not buy any 7.5j  18", ET51 (or close) 5 bolt 112mm pcd alloy wheel and fit the full-size 225/40-18 tyre.  Fits in the wheel well and the jack and wheel brace will fit inside the wheel cushioned in a suitable material to stop rattles and scratches on the wheel.  If you have a puncture in any of the four tyres you can replace with the spare and continue the journey with a car that drives as normal and isn't limited to 80kph.  I hate space-savers and refuse to have one in the car.  I always have a full-sized spare, by which I mean the same size as the 4 standard wheels.  Some manufacturers refer to a 205/55-16 spare in a car with 225/40-18 tyres as a 'full sized spare' when really they mean 'not a space-saver'.  Buy a decent jack not the usual single arm 'widow maker' - a small scissors jack would be suitable..

As philbes says. That is what I did as I do a lot of long motorway journeys at night when tyre places are shut.

It took me a couple of weeks watching eBay to get a rim, but it is perfect.

Yep that's the wrong wheel and won't fit on the front, either a miss build or the dealer had one lying around and pocketed your money.

I really hope this isn't breaking any forum rules.

If it's any help I've still got a spare gemini anthracite that came off my vRS. I had two but sold one on the forums.

I was going to keep it until I had a worn tyre to put on it and then use it as a spare instead of the space saver but I'm getting hassle with in being in the shed.

I'm in Edinburgh though so it'd be a shipping job. I think it was about £20 for the last one.

Not ideal but:

Will it fit on the rear due to smaller disc and caliper? If it does then if you have a front puncture it means changing a rear to the front and space saver on the rear. Not ideal as I say but better than nothing.

I opted for the space saver, reason being the only flats I have suffered in last 5 years have been due to damaged wheels on pot holes.

I guess the vrs 18's won't put up much of a fight and no sealant is ever going to fill a buckled wheel and if it could it wouldn't be safe to continue.

Bit disappointed in that a full size alloy will fit, would have paid the premium at order to have one.

The saga continues....

Everyone is shutting the door in my face. I've tried 4 dealers and Skoda UK. They all say the same thing. You cannot buy a spare wheel for the Octavia VRS aftermarket and there is nothing we can do to help you. I've tried pointing out that Skoda are effectively saying "there is no guarantee we can supply you with spare parts if you car is damaged". They accepted that statement. I can't believe what I'm being told.

Dealers can't/won't supply me with a 3rd party solution as they don't want to take the risk. None of them will use their Demo cars to test what would and wouldn't work for me. They're not interested as they don't want to take any risks.

I can't believe we're left high and dry with something so fundamentally basic as a spare wheel!

Looks like I've got 2 choices now:

  • Buy what we think will work off eBay and take the risk.
  • Buy a full size anthracite Gemini (will it fit no problem?)

Shocked.

What a ridiculous situation!

If I were you I'd make sure a normal alloy fits in the boot (I'm 99% sure it does) and get a full sized spare to carry.

Are you able to take a wheel off your own car and try in the wheel well for peace of mind before shelling out the cash on a full size spare?

I've spoken to Skoda Customer Services. I've asked to speak to and/or escalate my issue to the people named above, they're just not having it. Computer says no so there is nothing they can do. They have raised a case but told me it will be resolved within 48 hours as the part doesn't exist to purchase. They won't source one from the factory for me or explain why there isn't one available. I pointed out that they are affectively telling customers that spare parts may or may not be available for their new cars - pot luck. Had I known this I wouldn't have bought my VRS - who would?

Totally fed up with Skoda CS, I've emailed Alasdair Stewart. I know they can't/won't do anything for me now so its an attempt to get visibility high above to prevent other customers from going through this.

Pfft - what a joke. I'm thinking about going to an independent wheel and tyre specialist and seeing what they can do for me.

Edit: I went to try the suggestion to put a Gemini rim in the tyre well only to find out you don't get a jack with the 'gunk and compressor' option. Gonna have to see if I can borrow one.

VW DEALER?

Or a SEAT dealer and ask for a spare wheel kit for a Leon Cupra (18" spacesaver). Find a random reg off autotrader or even their forecourt if they ask ;)

Time for a word with Auto Express!

They run weekly features about dealers / importers whose procedures are nonsensical. I'm sure they'd love to run your story (and you might even get a free subscription for your effort.

IIRC one of the O3 members on here is a motoring journalist. Can't remember who, though.
