  • Update from Skoda UK. There is now an aftermarket space saver and foam insert with toolkit available for the VRS. They are finalising the parts in their system but it should be purchasble via dealers

  • its total nonsence for any new car to come without a spare wheel in my opinion

  • I picked up my official aftermarket spare wheel kit for my VRS today. Its identical to the BTO factory option (no surprises there) - wheel, toolkit and foam insert all installed perfectly. Job done. B

I called the local VW dealer, they are saying the same as the Skoda dealer. They won't recommend anything non-standard as they would be liable if there is a problem and they're not prepared to take the risk.

If/when I find a spare wheel that does fit, I'm going to open my own business to fill the gap in the market.

DON'T tell them you're getting one for a Skoda, say its for their particular flavour of the Octavia (Golf GTI/GTD, SEAT Leon Cupra etc).

If it was for my car, I'd get the jack and toolkit for the regular one that they do sell (as its separate to the wheel) and one of the many hundreds of suitable alloys that are on ebay.

JUST SPOKEN TO A LOCAL VW DEALERS PARTS DEPT.

No Part No on their system either.

Bloody useless!!

I'm so frustrated right now I think I'd pay anyone a fee to source me a solution that I can just put in my car!

I'd lend you mine for the trip but I'm a bit out of the way. Any volunteers in Herts feeling generous?????

Lend someone you don't know an irreplaceable wheel? :D

Good point. As it's such a rare item I'll take advantage and sell it to you for a million, billion, squillion quid :D

I've spoken to Skoda Customer Services. I've asked to speak to and/or escalate my issue to the people named above, they're just not having it. Computer says no so there is nothing they can do. They have raised a case but told me it will be resolved within 48 hours as the part doesn't exist to purchase. They won't source one from the factory for me or explain why there isn't one available. I pointed out that they are affectively telling customers that spare parts may or may not be available for their new cars - pot luck. Had I known this I wouldn't have bought my VRS - who would?

Totally fed up with Skoda CS, I've emailed Alasdair Stewart. I know they can't/won't do anything for me now so its an attempt to get visibility high above to prevent other customers from going through this.

Pfft - what a joke. I'm thinking about going to an independent wheel and tyre specialist and seeing what they can do for me.

Edit: I went to try the suggestion to put a Gemini rim in the tyre well only to find out you don't get a jack with the 'gunk and compressor' option. Gonna have to see if I can borrow one.

Surely he has enough clout to do something for you in 3 WEEKS FOR GODS SAKE!

How many people have to tell you the full size wheel fits and how many have to tell you what size rim you need, where to get it and what it will cost before you stop moaning and help yourself?!

I think with the service I've had from Skoda, I have every right to moan. Don't you?

Hi all,

Been speaking with Caffyns Skoda @ Tunbridge Wells through work so got away with emailing.

Darren in parts has been on to Skoda Uk and the official line he's had back

"There is NO Spare Wheel for the VRS, the one highlighted (see previous posts) would not be sufficient for your Vehicle"

Jokingly said to Darren if he could make a kit then he'd have a killing from Briskoda.

Separately parts prices would be

Alloy (Gemini) £300.13

Jack £27.34

Brace £16.06

Pirelli Tyre £151.00

First reaction was WOW!!!! Now to gun at Citygate for selling me a kit that doesn't work.

Regards

Brian

If there is no spare wheel available for a VRS why have I been allowed to order one and the factory accepted the order. There is even one in the options list it's a temporary space saver wheel suitable for 17" & 18" wheels

See the title of the thread. BTO is fine. You can't buy it retrospectively. The point of this thread is to figure out alternatives which some really helpful guys have put forward above already.

VW space saver is standard on a Golf GTI.

What a cheap shot by Skoda, to give you the Joke of a choice.

Also have you tried promotorukgroup shop on ebay? I haven't used them personally but they claim to specialise in space savers.

Does any off the NON Uk members have any joys with a spare?

Good call - they have this. I've emailed them asking for further info. Will report back.

i was referring to the post above mine that said this "There is NO Spare Wheel for the VRS, the one highlighted (see previous posts) would not be sufficient for your Vehicle".  hopefully you get a solution and a wheel that will fit

Wow, the promotorukgroup guys are really good. They answer emails in minutes and they've said that this should fit fine. They have 14 days return policy where they pay the shipping back if it doesn't fit for piece of mind so its a no brainer.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions - big help!

Just for info

I pulled my spacesaver out of the wheel well in my vRS and fitted my spare gemini alloy in (bare wheel as it's left over from the lorry versus vRS incident).

It doesn't actually fit, there's plenty of space on the width which makes sense as the space saver is 125/75/r18 BUT there's just not enough depth.  I'd say it was about 5mm too shallow although you could add a couple of wooden or rubber strips to lift the wooden floor off the alloy.

Hmm See http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/298692-vrs-space-saver-spare/page-2m and my two posts from months ago (39 & 42). No doubt in my mind the Gemini wheel AND tyre fits into the wheel well with floor fitting back down snugly all round. Only problem is to find a jack and rest of the kit to fit inside that wheel without forcing up the floor. As I said before, it would look like a kit in its hard foam container for a smaller wheel would do that job, or be capable of being cut down a bit to fit. Depth of wheel is all there; it's the diameter that needs reducing.from the vRS foam container you see in my pics.

"Spent a happy few minutes today taking one of my OE Gemini 18" alloy wheels with the usual 225/40 tyre and trying it in the vRS estate wheel well. The good news, as posted before, is that it fits fine and boot floor flap closes, though the flap does rest directly on the tyre sidewall with no margin. The slightly bad news is that the jack kit in its hard foam packaging won't drop down into the well of this wheel but sits on top of the rim (just as it does on the space saver). So if the well contained a full sized wheel I would have to put the jack kit into the boot . For anyone contemplating a permanent full size spare, it should be possible to trim down the foam and make it fit inside the wheel rather than sit on the rim. Pics show the Gemini in place, the boot floor then fully closed, and the way the jack kit sits on top of the wheel rim.

£135 for a space-saver!  I'd rather spend £95 on a full-sized alloy wheel (18x7.5, ET around 51) and a decent tyre (£100 or even less?).  Total of £195 at the most for a wheel & tyre that allows you to continue your journey with the usual level of grip/braking and not limited to 80kph.  That is well worth the extra £60 to me.  I know it won't be a matching alloy wheel but it will match much better than a space-saver.  Have you ever seen a car similar to a Octavia vRS wearing a space-saver? - what a joke.

When I informed my insurance company that I had a non-Skoda correct size alloy with a full sized tyre as a spare the comment was "well done".
