Drag race techniques - Discuss

dont do a burnout in a FWD car if your on street tyres all youll do is waste them although spin them a little to get all the stones and dirt etc off them.

heres a video that might help a little, also noticed he changes gear with the throttle floored.donno if that would help though

I've tried changes like that in the past but I wouldn't do it too often - puts a huge strain on the drivetrain. It used to make the wheels squeak in second and third in my old 2.0 Mondeo - only way it would ever do that. And yes it does help.

Damn.... a full tank of fuel in my car is about 29KG !

look on the brightside..now its worth more than when you put it in...a vertitable investment sir !

i always found my octy performed worse as the tank got emptier. fuel pump a weak point maybe

If you're dragging anything under 1/8th or so of a tank may result in a bit of fuel starvation, also if there's a layer of scum in the bottom (on higher mileage cars) that too can get pulled in and clog up the fuel filter. Better off with 1/4 tank or so I'd have thought.

even with 1/4 it felt slower. my octy always felt faster with a near full tank

Remove front & rear screens to improve aerodynamics. ;) (maybe your entire boot lid as its an estate :D)

In all seriousness don't worry about it. Just enjoy the sight of a pair of Jags disappearing in front of you. BTW - I want more info about the supercharged XJR. As you might know I've been driving one on a G plate, and the owner has talked about supercharging it. Wondering if you could assist with a little info from. ;)

when is the race ? :)

race may well be tomorrow - we've just had a prractice run with the Ford Racing Puma and my Octy.

Racing driver excuse: I forgot to turn the ASR off

Once I was going I easily overhauled him and left it far behind.

I stripped my car for the upcoming ring excursion, back seats, carpet, mats, spare, jack and tool kit etc. if i dont need it, it wont be going. Weighed it all, and ive got well over 100kgs in my spare bedroom out of my car. (car goes so much better too)

(for the inquisitive members, i will be taking 4 spare wheels, jack etc, but leaving them out of the car when I arrive at the ring).

As for a good start, in my fabia, i set off in second gear to reduce wheelspin, and take a gearchange out of the equasion. Not clutch friendly, but really helps. Dont know if you can do that with a petrol, never tried it.

I wouldnt be removing any body parts, as you will make it less aerodynamic, unless you have a roof rack of course.

To make it more scientific, i would suggest to your mates that it is a best of three runs.

Are you sure its 100Kgs mate? Thats impressive if it is!

What would you say was the heaviest thing...also, do the rear seats need unbolting in the fabia or do they just unclip or something?

Edit..Just read that you weighed it all, so i guess you are sure :D

Shifty, tape up the bonnet panel gaps for the 'ring too ;)

New Idea to help with the drag race

wire up your back lights to the battery so they dont use the altenator

and turn them all on

an then the photons produce will help push u along (hopefully get you to the speed of light) :D

Doesn't work with petrols dude, they have much longer gears than diesels and you'll need to rev extremely high to take off to a good start with it, but you'd have probably burnt out the clutch by then. You can do it with petrol pick ups though which usually have an extremely short first gear than can only go upto about 10kph!

The rear seats are really easy to take out' date=' apparently, although I've never tried. Spare wheel definitely.

Something that's always puzzled me - how do you do a burnout? Must be impossible in a fwd car  I assume with rwd you rev the engine with your foot on the brakes?[/quote']

thats what handbrakes are for!!

Yes, as Goochie posted. Now someone tell me how you do it in a RWD car...

Oh and we've had the discussion about whether the Octavia handbrake is up to the job, or NOT too :P

in an auto its easy, just need to employ a little left foot braking.

manuals are very difficult but can be done by either:

1) bootful of revs, sidestep clutch, left foot brake to prevent forward creep.

2) same technique but employing heel/toe instead.

if you can hold it long enough you can get the back brakes to glow!

3) fit a brake bias valve or line lock system. this makes it too easy!

the first one used to work on my old 3.0 alfa 75, but you need to be brutal!

lesson over.....

oh, and as an extra. i read somewhere that losing 5 kilos in weight is worth

the equivalent of gaining 1bhp and vice versa if thats any use.

The rear seat upright bits were the heaviest. Spare and kit weighs 4.5 stone on its own......

Easy to remove. Squabs just unclip, uprights are locked into place. Use a screw driver to turn the lock and the end just pops out. (door ends) they slide off a pole in the middle too. Easier to do than explain. Then you need to unbolt the seat belt clips, and bobs yer auntie.

@ Goochie, I feel taping up the panel gaps may be a bit too much on my first ring adventure, but if i feel i can do better by doing so, i shall certainly consider it.

Right - thought it must be something like that - good for the rear brakes, NOT! :D

If possible, try and get the drag recorded so we can all see :D
