Rapid elegance few questions

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Just purchased a 1.6tdi elegance on a 63 plate and just need a few questions answering.

How accurate is the mileage left to empty on the maxi as It doesn't seem to have moved from half a tank to just below a quarter. It started at 340 and now it's at 220 after doing 200 miles. Also reads that I am doing 63.9 mpg on average.

I have read that you can access vcsd and change the language to Australia to change the kmh in the maxidot to mph. As anyone done this or is locale to Warrington to try this out / help me out.

Last question. Is it worth upgrading the Amundsen set to the Columbus set. I've not priced it up but it looks like it has more features.

Cheers in advance

Barry

Milage left is based on how you drive, so you will see variations.

If it was previously driven harder than you are now, you'll seem to get "free miles".

I know this Austrailian setting can be activated on the Yeti, but not tried it on a Rapid yet.

No, it's not worth it IMO.

The cost will be £500 plus and you can a bit bigger screen and a music hard drive.

Thanks for the reply bossfox.

My old Fabia VRs was accurate on the mileage side but over exaggerated the mpg side of things.

The speedo on the maxidot is annoying in kph.

The stereo is good and the satnav. Only issue is that I can't get my iphone lead to play through the stereo in the USB port and have to do it via Bluetooth. It says no media found.

Thanks

You need a Y cable (a cheap one on eBay that says it's for Mini should work), the USB side of things is not for USB mass storage but is actually a TTL->RS232 Serial converter, with the other part of the Y cable being a standard 3.5mm audio cable. The official cable from Skoda is stupidly expensive for what it is.

In terms of MPG reported on the trip mine tends to be around 5% optimistic compared to what I actually get brim to brim but I don't know if there's going to be any difference in (in)accuracy between the petrol and diesel variants.

Note: the *really* cheap Y cables on eBay that have a very thin triangular junction box where the two cables branch off actually don't have any type of serial converter in them so will not work.

Thanks Thecko

Do you have any links to the one I need on eBay. If you cannot post on here, can you message me. Still want to change the kph on the maxi, have you tried it Thecko ??

Thanks in advance

You need something like this - just plug it in to the USB + Aux In that's in the centre console

Cheers Thecko. I've purchased the one you put up and will let you know how I get on.

I can't seem to find one for the iPhone 5 except for BMW iDrive if that's the same?

I don't know anything about the iDrive system unfortunately mate, is the iPhone 5 the one with the newer connection type? I've read somewhere that apple updated the accessory protocol for the move to the lightning connectors so even if you were able to find the right cable the chances are you'd be out of luck :(

It'd be really nice if VAG had a technical website or point of contact we could query for things like this, but I suppose that's just wishful thinking as I imagine the radio units aren't actually engineered within VAG but instead are contracted out to other firms.

I think Bluetooth may be your best bet in this case.

Yes it's has the small lightning plug on the iPhone 5 :(

The one on eBay for the BMW iDrive looks like the one in your link but with the new connector. I just want to control the music and track select on the Swing unit as Bluetooth won't let you apparently :(

I can't believe that on a 63 plate car that the back doors still fill up with water. LoL. Booked in with skoda and they said it will take half hour to sort out.

Yes you can't control playback with Bluetooth on the Swing unit..... I honestly can't say I know one way or the other if the cable you've found will work, my guess is no because Apple updated the accessory protocol, I suppose if the cable's cheap enough to not matter much you could try it on the understanding it might not work, but that's your choice :)

Thanks Thecko :)

I'll decide when I get the car on 1st Sept.

I have a rapid elegance 13 plate and an iphone4. I can link it via Bluetooth and have to use the voice controls - "music, play" or "music, next". It got annoying, especially when other people are in the car, so I bought a 32gb usb (a really small sized one) and plug that in to the mdi - works GREAT!

Ah good to know. Can you select tracks using a memory stick?

I was about to ask this very question. In my civic I have a usb stick plugged in all the time and have the play mode set to random so I don't have to touch it

With the usb stick you can use the radio and on the elegance you can use the steering wheel controls. I've not tried the Bluetooth as it takes so long to do. On that note make sure the usb is formatted to FAT32 and a usb2 or higher!

Have a slightly unusual media set-up in our Spaceback;

Our previous three Skoda's had a SD card reader, whereas the basic Swing in our MY14 SE is devoid of this function (plus others like DAB etc.).

So instead of getting a data stick, I just used the portable USB 3.0 SD card reader I had at home; works fine and I can access whichever album file or track required through the Swing, although I've not tried the steering controls as yet.

Ah good to know. Can you select tracks using a memory stick?

Yes you can, the Swing head unit allows you to browse artists and select the albums and tracks you like.  I use Windows Media Player (not an Apple fan) to load an 8gb stick with music and it works perfectly.

I used a really old memory stick yesterday and it works well in the swing. You can even drag and drop from iTunes so think I'm going to get a bigger capacity one? Also means I don't have to have the iPod in the car.

Guys. The lead I bought of eBay is not very good. The audio is not as good as Bluetooth music and the lead is very poorly made. I had to push the jack plug from side to side to work all speakers. It did look good on screen though and was able to choose albums and tracks easily..I may try the USB stick next.

I had the same problem with the y cable/lead that I had, memory stick seems the best option, especially as its easy to just drag and drop from itunes

I'm glad you can get music from iTunes and put it on the stick :)

I think I'll take the USB option too.
