Fabia diet - facts on the flab

Featured Replies

Hello chaps

Just been out for a fiddle with my Furby and decided to take out a few bits (as described by Shifty)

I'm sure some of you will think this is a bit crazy, but i read so much about modding on here etc (esp Jason's fabia) and i feel left out :o

In this time of fuel crisis, heck i might even save a few pennies in MPG. I also can't remember the last time someone actually sat on my back seat

In my Briskodian research i have found that:

The spare wheel fitted with 16" Michelin = 17.4KG

Tool Kit = 3.1KG

Rear seat squabs = 3.8KG

Rear seat backs = 18.9KG

Parcel shelf = 2KG

Total weight saved...............................45.2KG

Rally Monster! :D

Just gotta hope you dont get a flat now eh?

dont forget your mats, carpet, and any crap thats in your door pockets, glove box etc.

Must check my scales too.:)

Get a large tin of tyre weld, just in case.

I'll be putting the stuff in again in a few weeks

I also have an electric rapid tyre inflator...good for all but a complete blowout

Only trouble is you've now made a nose-heavy car even lighter at the rear end, so expect it to be more tail happy :D

Chris

Remove the glove box piece of pi55 to do and must weigh something :)

If you take the engine out it will be even lighter !! LOL

parcel shelf 2kg? Really! I would have thought it would not have weighed that much. Shows how much everything weighs eh? Combine that with the weight of all my false floor, pair of 12" subs, amps, etc - Must really add up to a good 10% of the car weight in my case. :o

Sod it, I like the music - so the ICE will be going back in. :speaker: :D :speaker:

Eat salad for a week!

Well, if losing the parcel shelf saves 2kg, I should think a good dose of laxatives would have a similar effect on the driver.

Went for a quick drive last night and just got into work.

The car is definitely a bit quicker! The acceleration feels more urgent and it also feels a bit lighter on its feet in the bends, so quite a good result really :)

As far as the car being tail happy, i guess this might be possible on track but on the road i don't think my driving is very extreme so i doubt it would be an issue. When i drove into the (empty) entrance to the car park at work i got a little four wheel drift, so i guess its still pretty neutral with the eibachs.

One side effect i wasn't expecting is that the car sounds really different!

On the plus side there is an interesting added sound to the turbo from under the car (exhaust?) and when you put your foot down the fuel pump makes quite a cool whining sound. You can also hear the exhaust sound more...would be pretty cool with a milltek/blueflame i reckon.

On the negative side the rear tyres are more audible and so is the rear suspension, but that is fairly quiet. Oh and the fuel sloshes around in the tank like a gooden.

I actually think the extra sounds make you feel more like a part of the car and i like it, but only for a bit of fun for a few weeks. Would be a pain in the backside on the motorway.

Happy driving

Andy

you should try running a clio 172 with a supersprint race exhaust on it with nothing in the rear i had to use earplugs half the time

That is the result I expected after stripping mine.....

With the eibachs fitted, i now have some negative camber which goes some way to tame it. I have provoked the car in a quite aggressive fashion on long sweeping bends and huge roundabouts and all I can do is lift a rear wheel up. Under hard braking it hasn't affected it either, or not that I have noticed. Also as has been said, the car is quicker, it gives even more punch when the turbo kicks in, and the added noise from the rear adds to the feeling of speed and acceleration. It's as close to a petrol as you can get now in my mind, but returns 50+ mpg....

Passengers? Not any more ;)

is this whats known as the placebo effect? :D

surly 42kg cant make that much of a noticable difference, without it being on various sensors ;)

The rear ends stays reasonably planted.

I gave mine a stupid amount of stick on the sprint course a few back. One of the corners is a hairpin round the end of a central reservation and I had to be siilly to get the rear end to go.

True, there probably isn't much difference but the 'feeling' is there so thats the main thing ;)

Like Shifty said, the extra noise adds to the sensation.

I reckon it can. I think mine feels different with a full tank of fuel compare to empty.

You can definitely notice a difference in 42 kg of weight. Suggestion... if you can try taking the battery out of the engine bay and instead wiring it into the boot. Better front/rear weight distribution :D

Yep 42kgs is quite a bit, i was surprised how much the back of the seats weigh, they are pretty solid.

I have been thinking about it the other way around too. Imagine putting 42kgs of shopping in the boot, i bet the car would feel slower on the way home

Or buy a racing battery :D

Was going to say 42kg isn't to be sniffed at, I used to bench press 50kg and you would certainly notice that if it was put in the car!
