Octavia Sport canbus query for aftermarket HU

Featured Replies

I have an 07 Octavia Sport 2.0 TDI.

I am looking to change the  "audience" head unit out for an Alpine Cde-W235BT.

The car does not have any controls on the steering wheel.

I have been told I need a canbus adapter in order to install the Alpine.

I have looked at this http://www.connects2.co.uk/ProductInformation.aspx?id=16843&p=CTKSK02

as it is a complete kit with hopefully everything I need.

I just want someone to confirm that I am getting the right thing?

Thanks

I'm not sure if the Connects2 solves this problem.........there is no switched live in the quadlock as all the OEM headunits are told to switch on/off via CANBus. Usually this involves running a line from an empty fuse socket in the the fuse-box.

It won't bring anything new to the party either...the Alpine spec doesn't mention CANBus, so it won't be displaying time/temp etc from the car anyway.

Also, IIRC, Skoda do a double-din facia for after-market units which might be worth a look.

Its so confusing. Everything I have read so far says that you cant just chuck in an aftermarket HU in a car with canbus. I was under the impression that the connects2 adaptor will allow a normal iso connected HU to connect to a canbus system.

So even with the connects2 adaptor I will not get any power to the alpine HU? I will have to run a line to the fuse box?

My head hurts!

You will get power, but you'll have to remember to turn the headunit on and off yourself. There is also the risk of battery drain because the supply that's meant to be off without any key in the ignition will be on all the time.

There is no switched supply in the Octy2, all the power leads behind the headunit are on all the time regardless of ignition position, so swapping the wires will make no difference.

Switched live from the fusebox is the way to go: 10 minutes and it's in :) :)

Isn't that why the permanent and ignition switched power leads are swapped round for aftermarket installations?

That's for manufacturers who have their own interpretation of "standard" ;)

Usually it's the difference between Japanese cars and European cars.
