turbo and head gasket

Featured Replies

So ive been really unlucky and stupid for not getting a proper inspection before i bought but anyway.

My turbo has started making a siren noise 10 days after buying and i paid to have it looked at and it apparently has too much play, mechanic reckons i could get another 5000 miles out of it if i drive carefully but im going to get it done soon, what is the cheapest way? Buy a reconditioned one and pay a mobile mechanic to fit?? Also what are good companies to buy from?

Also i have coolant loss and the mechanic cant find any leaks so said it must be head gasket but cant prove it until he opens up the engine?? I thought you could do a compression test??

I have no way i can get the dealer who sold me the car to chip in for any of this work can i?

If it's a dealer then yes, if it's a garage you can try but will more than likely get told no!

A compression test can be done but might not show any signs of head gasket.

He can rest the expansion bottle for exhaust gasses which can show head gasket failure.

whats the difference between dealer and garage??

A dealer will want to keep you happy, assuming you've had it less than 12 month, they have to help you!

A garage, can be owned and ran by Mr Roger Rabbit who doesn't car about you or the car. If you start playing the law card will just say "well sue me..."

Either way it's always worth asking or at least letting them know! They can't do anything if you don't tell them.

You can return the car to them giving them 7 days to rectify all faults to the satisfaction of an independent inspection or you'll accept a full refund, call trading standards for advice on how to proceed, if you're a member of a motoring organisation they can also help you. It's too much money for small claims court and the 'dealer' may well just give up and refund you if you get trading standards involved.

What exactly can i say though? The turbos not gone but its got a lot of play and needs replacing soon? Its been 2 weeks since i bought it

I would try your luck with them, if need be take a mechanic friend with you and have them state to them what is wrong. I'd also take advice from citizens advice in order to ensure you use the correct legal terms as I believe they have a duty of care to ensure the vehicle is fit for purpose. It does depend on the size of the garage you bought it off how much joy you will have. I had a sensor fault with mine, PD130, within a month or so of buying it and they covered that cost but I did have three months warranty with it. If a turbo is required, and you decide to keep it, I'd speak to Xman to get a price as he is substantially cheaper than most. Best of luck!

Unfortunately dont have a mechanic friend so dont know how to prove it apart from the noise, its quite a small garage so not quite sure what my luck will be, do you reckon id have a case through trading standards bare in mind the car has 100,000 miles on

My advice would be, don't go in all guns blazing. Have a chat with the garage and explain the situation. If the turbo is on its way out its technically failed as it will be operating outside of its effective operational tolerances (play in the shaft). Do you have clear in your own mind what you'd be happy with? Always good to go with a proposal. Does the garage have a workshop?

Well id at least like half the price of the turbo to be covered and done somewhere for a good price not like a skoda dealer wherell theyll charge a ridiculous amount, they dont have a garage no, problem is the garage is 80 miles away so a nightmare to travel too etc

Siren noise isn't the end of the world.

My turbo was noisy for 10s of thousands of miles (~90k-130k mileage) and eventually only died because I over revved it trying to save a spin during a track day.

By comparison my wife's Fabias turbo blew with no warning whatsoever after only 50k

The standard KKK turbo does seem to provide a bit of a lottery on it's life span.

I'd personally not heed any warning from the mechanic unless he's a friend or comes well recommended.

Quite likely that a back street garage will claim it's worse than it is to get you to pay them for a replacement etc.

When my car hit 100k I kept a look out on here for standard turbos which had been removed following an upgrade.

Picked one up for £150. Stored it in the garage until one went pop then swapped them over.

Was about £300 labour at mates rates + £50 consumables.

Issue with that for you will be no garage is going to warranty work on a used turbo.

If it went wrong straight away they'd blame the turbo not their work and try to get out of it.

As said xman sells rebuilt turbos at really good prices on here which may help as that'll have a warranty and then get a garage to fit it and warranty their work.

Or of course the siren noise might be nothing and your car could be fine for many many more miles to come.

With regards to the seller I think you've got an incredibly small chance of getting anywhere.

I'll set the most pessimistic scene for you:

**ring ring**

"Hello so-and-so autos"

"yeah hi I bought a car from you 2 weeks ago and it's making funny noises. I've had it checked and been told it may breakdown soon and cause me a large bill"

"but there's nothing wrong with it now?"

"no but there might be in the future"

"but there wasn't when I sold you the car and isn't now?"

"no"

"and you didn't take out a warranty with us?"

"no"

"Then sorry there's nothing I can do"

"but..."

**click**

Where are you located? I have a mate with 15 years experience on Skodas - he replaced my turbo before work this morning!

By the way when i was looking to buy a repacement turbo theres 3 different turbo codings, does it matter which one i get as long as its ok for the blt engine or do i need the exact code? Ive had the garage look at the turbo but they didnt get the model number and i dont want to pay to have it off again (dont trust myself to take it off myself lol)

not sure there are 3 different ones I know there are 2 for sure.

Both are made byt KKK but the 2 turbos for the 2 different engines codes (earlier ASZ and later BLT) are different as the engines run different EGR set ups and as such have different sized/shaped exhaust manifolds

try this thread

the third turbo may have been the one used on the non-VRS TDI's maybe
